On Sunday, December 3 James “Jimmy” Garrison passed away suddenly. He had been dealing with a neuromuscular disease for 13 years. He was well beloved by his many friends and family. He had an amazing talent for woodworking and made wooden furniture and gifts for almost everyone he knew. He did not just keep his talent for himself. He even taught his friends how to woodwork, even as his chronic disease progressed.
Despite his disease, Jimmy spent a great deal of time in online media entertainment, making sure that friends and family had the latest and greatest music, documentaries and movies. Jimmy was very friendly and gregarious and never met a stranger. Even as his disease progressed, he maintained a positive attitude and loved his fellow man.
He was very involved in the Big Brother Program through the years and considered it his joy to be the “big brother” to an eight year old boy, Peter, and maintained a special relationship with him through the years until his passing. Peter is now 40 years old and still has held Jimmy in high esteem. Jimmy was even named “Big Brother of the Year” at one point.
He graduated from East Carolina University with a BA in Business Administration. During his career he was employed by Vocational Trades of Alamance, Burlington Furniture, McEwen Lumber and Endura Products.
A huge Tarheel fan, Jimmy never missed an opportunity to watch UNC play basketball and football. He was an avid golfer for 30 years. He even moved to a house on his favorite golf course, Greensboro National. He even loved running his dog in the evenings on the golf course.
Jimmy is survived by his wife Jennifer and son Dylan. Jimmy’s friends and family are missing him dearly and are thankful we had the great privilege of having him in our lives.
