James Marshall Hicks , 94, of Greensboro, North Carolina, took his first breath in Heaven recently, passing away at home after a long and courageous fight with multiple myeloma and chronic heart failure. A beloved brother, loving husband, devoted father, and wonderful friend, Jim was above all a fervent follower of Jesus Christ.
A Soldier’s Honor
Jim served his country with distinction in the US Army Airborne during the Korean War (1951–1953). A decorated soldier, he was the recipient of the Korean Service Medal with three Bronze Stars , the United Nations Service Medal , and the Combat Infantryman Badge. These honors reflected the same courage and discipline he would later pour into his faith and his family.
A Legacy of Global Impact
After his military service, Jim returned home to start a family and a trade. As God blessed the fruit of his hands, Jim responded with a life of radical obedience. Driven by the conviction that his resources were dynamic instruments in God’s hands, he dedicated a significant portion of his life to the mission field.
He was a cornerstone of One Mission Society and Men For Missions International . Jim didn't just give financially; he "went." Using his business mind and vast construction knowledge, he traveled with a team of laymen he inspired to go with him to several countries—sometimes where the U.S. Department of State advised against travel—to build boarding schools, churches, homes and educational facilities with his own hands.
While Jim could not see with his earthly eyes all the good his service achieved, his family finds comfort knowing he now sees the full fruit of his labor: the children attending the schools he built and the families who found salvation because of his support. He truly embodied the hands and mouth of Jesus to so many.
Family and Remembrance
Jim was the last surviving member of his immediate childhood family, preceded in death by his brothers, Harry A. Hicks, Jr. and N.C. Hicks , and his three sisters, Elizabeth Freeman , Nancy Reeves , and Martha McCormick .
His memory and legacy of faith are carried on by:
● Mary Frances Hall Hicks , his precious wife of 73 years.
● Mary Jane Hicks , his only daughter, who supported his mission work with joy and hope.
● Thomas F. Hall and wife Joy , surviving brother-in-law.
● Lawrence J. Hall , surviving brother-in-law.
● Numerous Nieces and Nephews who were impacted by his passion and encouragement.
We celebrate a life totally surrendered to the Savior. Jim’s willingness to GO, PRAY, and GIVE has left an indelible mark on this world, and we pray his legacy continues to bear fruit across the globe.
Jim’s celebration of life will be held at the Hanes Lineberry Funeral Home & Guilford Memorial Park on March 18, 2026, at 2 p.m. The funeral will be held in the chapel and entombment at the mausoleum behind the funeral home.
"Thank you, Lord, for blessing his family, his friends, and the mission work through Jim’s life!"
