A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, January 28, 2017, at Hanes Lineberry Funeral Service in the Lineberry Center, 515 North Elm Street. The family will receive guests following the service.
Jan was born Sept 16, 1934 on the island of Borneo, the Dutch East Indies (now called Indonesia) to petroleum engineer Jan Jacob Arps and opera singer Diderika Marie Arps Heijblok. Jan’s family immigrated to the US just before World War II and settled in Tulsa, Oklahoma where Jan attended public schols. Jan subsequently attended California Institute of Technology (Caltech) and graduated with with a B.S. in mechanical engineering. He then went on to earn an MBA from Harvard School of Business.
After Graduate School Jan settled in Dallas, Texas where he established the Arps Corporation to create and develop a real-time subsurface telemetry system for the petroleum drilling industry. In 1965 Jan sold Arps Corporation to what was to become Baker-Hughes, a major international oil service company.
Moving into venture capital, Jan participated in the funding and development of enhanced oil and natural gas production technology, the compact disk, the hybrid integrated circuit, and MRI and CAT scan medical diagnostic service centers.
Upon retirement in 1996 Jan moved to North Carolina where he established Jan Arps’ Traders’ Toolbox to develop and teach the use of unique computerized stock and futures trading techniques and software to traders worldwide. He is the author of “The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Technical Analysis” published by penguin books in 2010 and the developer of more than 400 unique software tools used by investors and traders worldwide to analyze financial market trends and behavior.
During his lifetime Jan Served as President of the Dallas Management Association, and President of several Barbershop Quartet Society chapters in Dallas and Seattle. He recently served on the board of Directors of the Bel Canto Choral Society in Greensboro.
A confirmed agnostic in later life, Jan was formerly a member of the First Unitarian Church of Dallas and the Unity Church of Seattle.
He is survived by his wife of 19 years, Margaret “Peggy” Lozier-Arps, brother Ronald Arps Phd , sons John Eric Arps, Craig (aka Hawk) Alan Arps, Kevin Paden Arps. He is further survived by grandchildren Kara, Kelly, and Kassie Arps of Atlanta, Ga., Mica and Kestrel Arps of Lopez, Wa., and Grant and Dominic Arps of Phoenix Az.
