Jasper W. Hunnicutt

Jasper “Jack” Watson Hunnicutt, born Jasper Flemming Hunnicutt on February 23, 1931, in Raleigh, North Carolina, passed away peacefully, at home surrounded by family. Jack was 94 years old, and he left behind a legacy rich in family, humor, and resilience. He was the son of Herman Watson and Myrtle Wiggins Hunnicutt of Raleigh NC. The Hunnicutt Family were known for their family restaurant at the North Carolina State Fair in Raliegh for over 50 years.

When Jasper entered the military, a twist of paperwork changed his life: his name was mistakenly recorded as Jack Watson Hunnicutt, borrowing his father’s middle name instead of his own, Flemming. While “Flemming” may have led to a fair share of teasing in his youth, the military’s accidental renaming likely spared him many more schoolyard battles. From that point forward, he was “Jack” to the world—known affectionately as “J-dub” by his sons and “J.W.” by friends, family, and co-workers. One thing is certain: he was never again called Flemming.

Jack had 4 sons Mike (wife Janet) of Greensboro NC, and Mike preceded Jack in death 20 months prior, Younce of Loveland Colorado, Donald of Cape May New Jersey and David of St Petersburg, Florida.

Jack met and the married of his life, Virginia Dare Hunnicutt in 1972, bringing 5 children to the family, AnneAdare, Adeila, Melody, Jeane and Tim, whom he loved as his own.

Jack retired after 26 years as an assistant manager at BellSouth. After retirement, his career path shifted to building homes in South Florida where he and Virginia lived for a number of years selling real estate, before returning to Greensboro. Jack once again returned to Florida in December 2023, with his son David, where he lived his last years sipping on a screwdriver on Pass-A-Grille Beach in St Petersburg at Sunset, eating fresh fish and enjoying a beautiful home and life in the warm sun.

Jack was preceded in death by 2 brothers Herman, and Charles, and 2 sisters Scarlett and Rose. He is survived by his sister Betty.

He was the proud grandfather of 21 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren and one fur-baby of 19 years, Watson Hunnicutt, the beloved family poodle.

Jack’s legacy lives on through his family, whose lives he shaped with warmth, wit, and a steadfast commitment to togetherness. He will be remembered fondly as a husband, father, brother, and friend whose presence left an indelible mark on all who knew him.
