Jay Robert Henegar, Sr. (Bob) passed away peacefully sleeping at his home on Sunday, November 26, 2023. The family wishes to thank all the members of the emergency teams that were most respectful and caring for him.
An only child, he was born in Knoxville, Tennessee on October 15, 1946 to the late Jay Ousley Henegar and Samie Francinia Taylor Henegar, He spent his early years in Miami, Florida and Birmingham, Alabama before moving with his parents to Greensboro, North Carolina.
He graduated from Page High School and attended Guilford College. He was a long time member of Westminster Presbyterian Church.
He was a very clever person and had a gusto for life. He loved movies, musical theatre and all genre of music. His desire was to build a log home and he knew all the plans by heart.
An avid swimmer, he loved being in and on the water. Besides swimming and snorkeling, he loved to fish in small boats and cruise the seas and oceans in large ships. He and Carole traveled from China to Scandinavia and through the Mediterranean and Caribbean seas. He loved nature, wooded land, animals and mountains.
He had a very kind and gentle nature with a quick laugh. He gave freely of his spare time for years to the Greensboro Jaycees and often reminisced about his time with the Junior Miss pageants, the Greater Greensboro Golf tournament, and so many other Jaycee charitable events. He participated in a Mission trip to Mexico to help build a Habitat for Humanity home for a family. He worked for the Greensboro News and Record, Cone Mills and Ace Hardware.
He is survived by his wife Carole, sons Jay Robert Henegar, Jr. (Shawn) of Denver, Colorado and Michael Scott Henegar (Jennifer) of Greensboro, grandson Taylor Saunders Henegar, granddaughters Amanda Henegar Jackson (Ethan) and Annie Dolan Henegar, stepson Andrew William McLuckie (Susan) of Wayne, Pennsylvania, and step grandsons Duncan William McLuckie and Ian Howard McLuckie. He was preceded in death by his step son James Ian McLuckie in addition to his parents.
A memorial service will be held at Westminster Presbyterian Church on Friendly Avenue on Friday, December 29, 2023 at 11:00am. A reception will follow the service.
