prestigious Cheltenham Ladies College in England. After WW II, she immigrated to the US and worked in New York City for many years. She had an interesting and successful career as a personal assistant to a number of influential people, one of whom was Mrs William (“Babe”) Paley.
In the 1970’s she moved to Greensboro to be closer to family and worked at a number of different jobs, gathering a wonderful variety of friends. She was never without a poodle or two, who provided her with love, companionship, and the joy of a daily walk together. Jean loved gardening, knitting and needlepoint. Many of her friends and family were the happy recipients of the beautiful sweaters that she made. One of her greatest pleasures was to put together a large pot of curry to share. She will be greatly missed by her family, friends and her precious poodle, “Quiche”.
She is survived by her sisters, Sheila Barker of Greensboro and Hazel Newton of Kingston on Thames, England. Also by her beloved niece, Sarah Balle (Paul) of North Redington Beach Florida, and her nephews Mark Newton (Annette) of London, England, John Barker (Kitty) of Middleburg, Virginia, Kit Barker (Linda) of Jamestown, and their children and grandchildren.
The family would like to thank her close friends for their love and support during her illness.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 6 p.m. on May 10th at the O’Henry Hotel, Greensboro. In lieu of flowers, contributions to your favorite animal charity would be appreciated.
