Born in Greensboro on New Year’s Day in 1924, he attended Greensboro Senior High School (later known as Grimsley Senior High), the first of three generations of the Hyman family to attend there. He lived first on Walker Ave, grew up on Rolling Road, then raised his children on Hobbs Road, with his first wife Judy Rosenstock Hyman, whom he married in 1956.
After working with his father at Hyman’s Furniture Company on S. Elm Street, Jerry started a home construction business. He was president and owner of Brant Homes, Inc, building hundreds of homes and several apartment complexes in Greensboro. In 1964, Jerry was elected president of the Greensboro Home Builders Association. He co-founded Boy Scout Troop 212 in the basement of Temple Emanuel, where he was a life-long member.
Jerry was the visionary and founder of The Greensboro Children’s Museum. He visited more than 20 children’s museums around the US and Canada to gather the best ideas for the children of Greensboro. He had a keen interest in revitalizing Downtown Greensboro, and in 2003 realized a dream of a place in Downtown where young children from all over Greensboro could come play. He was proud to be part of a four generation Greensboro family.
He is survived by his children: Michael Hyman and his wife Nancy of Madison, NJ, Dr. Mark Hyman and his wife Anita of Greensboro, and Linda Strauss and her husband Steve Strauss of Bethesda, MD; his grandchildren Sam, Danielle, Evi, Adele, Joshua, and Daniel; his nephews Rick Blue, Jim Blue, and John Blue, and his niece Lisa Blue Barron; his wife Susan Macdonald Hyman, her children Brad Macdonald and Jamie Furches, her grandson Aaron, and her granddaughters Gwyne and Jessa.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday 12:00 noon at Beth David Synagogue with Rabbi Eliezer Havivi and Rabbi Fred Guttman officiating. Burial will follow at the Greensboro Hebrew Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to The Greensboro Children’s Museum, 220 N Church Street, Greensboro, NC 27401 or B’nai Shalom Day School, 804 Winview Drive, Greensboro, NC 27410.
