Mrs. Jerry Hartman DeLong

Mrs. DeLong was born on March 17, 1927 in Chattanooga, Tennessee to Mary Flo Guffey Hartman and Luther Lee Hartman. She attended the University of Chattanooga and was a member of Kappa Delta Sorority.

Jerry married returning WWII prisoner-of-war Frank David DeLong, Jr. on September 6, 1947 in Chattanooga and they made their home in Allentown, Pennsylvania, where their daughter Sheri was born. Jerry worked as a proofreader for the local Allentown newspaper, while Frank finished his education at Muhlenberg College. A few years later, they moved to Chattanooga, Tennessee, where their son David was born. They eventually moved to North Carolina, where their son Scott was born, finally settling in Greensboro in 1968.

Jerry retired as a City of Greensboro employee after thirty years’ service in 1997. Her beloved husband Frank died that same year. Up until the time her health started to deteriorate, she was a member of the Greensboro Coliseum Retirees and the local Prisoner-of-War organization. Jerry had many special friends, especially Bailey Hobgood, Virginia Cudworth, Jane & Bob Fredrickson and others too numerous to mention, in both organizations.

She was predeceased by her husband Frank, her son David, sisters Mary Flo Hartman Clift of Chattanooga, Edith Carole Hartman Case of Austin, Texas, and Lynn Hartman Gould of the Tampa area, Florida.

Mrs. DeLong is survived by her daughter Sheri DeLong Sigler of Corvallis, Montana and her husband Bart Pickard and her son Scott DeLong of Oakville, Ontario, Canada and his wife Michele. She is also survived by her grandchildren, William M. Sigler, Jr. of Rexburg, Idaho and his wife Leslie, Kaitlyn DeLong and Lindsey DeLong, both of Oakville, Ontario, Canada. Mrs. DeLong is also survived by two great-grandchildren, William M. Sigler III and Clara Sigler, both of Rexburg, Idaho. She leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews.

Mrs. DeLong was a member of the congregation at Peace United Church of Christ in Greensboro. She loved the many wonderful friends she had within the Church. A very special thank you goes to Theo Scott, Sherri Vestal, Yvonne Smothers, Jean Morgan, Doris Yeattes and Dorothy Meeks and numerous others who gave so freely of their time and friendship to be with our mother over the past several years.

Jerry grew to truly care for her home health care providers from Home Instead, specifically Tracey, Sherrie and Sharon. The family will be eternally grateful for the excellent care and genuine friendship they provided.

A celebration of her life will be held at Peace United Church of Christ in Greensboro on Wednesday March 23, 2001 at 7:00 p.m. with the Reverend James R. Luck Jr. officiating.

At her request, Mrs. DeLong will be cremated and then buried in Arlington National Cemetery with her beloved husband.
