Joan Schiff Schneiderman

Joan is survived by her five sons: Richard Schneiderman; Michael Schneiderman (Lynn Donahue); Larry Schneiderman (Milanka); David Schneiderman (Sharon Adams); and Lee Schneiderman (Rebekah). She also leaves behind her grandchildren, Rebecca Richman (Zach), Lea Cadwalader (Blake), Evan Schneiderman, Sam Schneiderman, Josie Schneiderman, Katherine Schneiderman, Hannah Harlowe, and Tate Vestel, as well as her great-grandson, Luka Schneiderman.

Joan was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 46 years, Kenneth "Kenny" Schneiderman; her mother, Anne Leader Schiff; and her father, Leonard Abe Schiff. She was also preceded by her sisters, Pearl Kotzen (Harold) and Cecille Shulman (Martin), and her sisters-in-law, Anita Cohen (Ritchie) and Beryl Schneiderman.

Joan was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, friend, teacher, and businesswoman. She lived a rich and colorful life, forged friendships that endured for decades, raised five sons, and built a family that continues to grow. Her greatest joy was always her family, and the love she gave them will carry on for generations to come.

Joan and her twin sister Cecille were born in Chicago, Illinois on April 4, 1933. Growing up Joan spent time with her father at his movie theatre watching movies thus, beginning her lifelong love of film.

After high school, Joan enrolled at the National College of Education in Illinois, intent on becoming a teacher, and taught for several years before marrying Kenny Schneiderman in 1958.

In 1960, they welcomed their first set of twin boys, RIchard and Michael. Soon after, Joan and Kenny moved to Greensboro, North Carolina, where Kenny opened Midas Muffler. Once settled down in Greensboro, their family continued to grow; Larry and David arrived in 1964, and Lee followed in 1968. Having grown up an identical twin herself, she was not surprised that she would go on to have two sets of identical twins of her own; being a twin was simply part of who she was.

Around 1978, Joan and Kenny founded Auto Driveaway in Greensboro, a business they ran until 2005. Many of her sons, and countless others across Greensboro, remember fondly what it was like to work at Auto Driveaway. For them, it was never just a job, it was a chance to be part of Joan's world.

Joan flourished in Greensboro, becoming an active member of the Beth David Sisterhood and Hadassah, where she built friendships that lasted a lifetime. Her calendar was always full with Bridge, Mah Jong, and tennis and she was rarely without a good book close by.

After Kenny suffered a serious stroke in 1985, she devoted herself to his care until his death in 2004; demonstrating the strength, loyalty, and love that characterized so much of her life.

Family always stood at the center of Joan's world. She took special delight in her grandchildren and cherished watching her family grow year after year. An avid cook and baker, she was especially beloved for her crescent cookies. She loved hosting dinners, particularly for Jewish holidays, and nothing brought her more joy than a home filled with good food, conversation, and laughter. Being surrounded by the people she loved was where Joan was happiest.

After Kenny's passing, Joan began a new chapter of her own. She joined a Bat Mitzvah class at Beth David Synagogue and celebrated the Bat Mitzvah she never had as a girl. This was a meaningful milestone that reflected her lifelong devotion to her Jewish faith, her community, and her openness to new experiences, even later in life.

We will always remember Joan as a strong willed, fiercely loyal and loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend.

She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

A graveside service will be held at Greensboro Hebrew Cemetery, 2911 West Gate City Blvd, Greensboro, NC 27403, on August 30, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. A gathering will follow at Beth David Synagogue, 804 Winview Drive.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Beth David Sisterhood or the Greensboro Jewish Federation.
