Joe Douglas Brower Jr.

He was a graduate of Greensboro Senior High School and spent most of his life working in the hardware industry, where he built a long and meaningful career. He retired from Odell Hardware Company after 38 years as a store planning manager. Even after retiring, Joe wasn’t ready to slow down. He continued doing what he loved at Cardinal Lawn and Hardware for many more years, and later spent time working at Greensboro Auto Auction.

Joe never met a stranger. He always had a story to tell or a joke to share, and he had a way of making people feel right at home.

He was a big sports fan and loved cheering on his favorite teams, including Carolina Tarheel basketball and the Atlanta Braves. Through his daughter, he also became a Kansas City Chiefs fan and enjoyed following the Greensboro Swarm.

Joe had a true green thumb and could grow just about anything, especially his tomatoes. He also loved history and enjoyed learning and sharing what he knew.

He was a member of Wendover Hills Church.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Larry Wayne Brower.

He is survived by his wife, Beverley Shanks Brower, with whom he shared 61 years of marriage; his daughters, Jennifer Jo Brower Stevenson and husband Jason of Mooresville, and Kelly Ann Brower Kivett and husband Chris of Jamestown; his grandchildren, Ava Makana Stevenson, Allie Makala Stevenson Lemings and husband Caleb, Carson Brady Kivett, and Olivia Blair Kivett; and his great-granddaughter, Lani Jo Lemings.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, at Hanes-Lineberry Funeral Home Sedgefield Chapel, with Reverend Tom Raven officiating. Interment will follow at Guilford Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until the time of service.

Joe will be remembered for his kindness, his stories, and the way he made people feel like they mattered.
