

John Patrick Haywood passed away peacefully at his home on June 17, 2026, at the age of 54, following complications from sepsis. He was preceded in death by his father, John Nathaniel Haywood. He is survived by his beloved wife, Cathy Haywood; his children, Chloe Davis and her husband, Grayson Davis, and Gin Haywood; his mother, Linda Shanks Haywood; and his cherished dog, Schatzi, and cat, Carl.
Patrick graduated from North Carolina State University and began his career as a history teacher before earning his law degree from the University of North Carolina School of Law. He practiced law for more than 20 years at Carruthers & Roth before founding his own independent law firm.
Prior to his legal career, Patrick proudly served in the United States Navy as a Seabee for eight years. He remained deeply committed to serving his community throughout his life, volunteering his time and leadership to numerous organizations. He served for many years on the YMCA Board of Directors, including as Board President in 2025, and was a dedicated supporter and board member of the Greensboro History Museum.
As an avid sports fan, Patrick rarely missed an opportunity to cheer on NC State athletics and the Carolina Hurricanes. He will be remembered for his dedication to his family, his service to others, and his sharp sense of humor.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, July 12, 2026, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Greensboro History Museum.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made to the charity of your choice in Patrick’s honor.
Patrick will be deeply missed by his family, friends, colleagues, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
