Mr. Pinson was born in Danville, VA on April 26, 1957, the first son of Jerry H. Pinson and Marvin J. Pinson, Jr. He is survived by his father Marvin J. Pinson, Jr, stepmother Mary “Watty” Pinson, daughter Katherine N. “Katie” Pinson and son, Brian M. Pinson both of Charlotte, and his former wife, mother of his children and confidante Elizabeth (Beth) Berry. He is also survived by brothers David Pinson (Bibby) of Burlington, NC, G. Frederick Pinson of Greensboro, NC.
John graduated from Halifax County Senior High in South Boston, VA where he lettered in football and tennis. He was a 1983 graduate of Elon University. While attending Elon, he served as an assistant trainer to the 1980 & 1981 NAIA Championship Football teams. He coached several little league and peewee football teams while living in Roanoke, VA for 25 years.
He served in the United States Navy on the USS Thomas C Hart as a Medical Corpsman from 1976 – 1980 with deployments to the Vietnam conflict area and the Mediterranean Sea.
He began his career with the City of Burlington Athletic Department and the Roanoke American Red Cross. John was a born salesman having never met a stranger. His career was in Virginia and the Carolina’s in industrial sales engineering and management, and as Operations Manager for Simon Property Group in Charlotte, NC.
He enjoyed woodworking, hunting both large game and upland birds, skeet shooting, eventually participating in tournaments, church activities or just walking through the woods marveling at what God has provided for all of us. His favorite activity, especially later in life was fly fishing the multitude of streams and rivers in Southwestern Virginia. There, he found true peace, tranquility and bliss. Whether he was trout fishing with his many friends or alone, he always returned with a huge smile on his face.
John was a loving son, husband, father, brother and friend to many. His greatest enjoyment was coaching and watching his children develop and become skilled in their particular sporting activities. He taught his son Brian to play football, golf and work with tools. He even taught his daughter to pass a football without “throwing it like a girl”. It was not the years in his life that count – but the life in his years.
While private in his faith, it was a strong part of his life - serving as an Elder in the Presbyterian Church. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 12, 2015 at 11:00am in the sanctuary of First Presbyterian Church, 617 N. Elm Street, Greensboro, NC. Visitation with the family will be in the Virginia Gilmer Room at the conclusion of the memorial service.
