

John was born on May 3, 1953 in Evanston, Illinois. During his senior year of high school, he moved to Greensboro where he graduated from Western Guilford High School. John met his future wife, Melanie Thompson, while working at Oakhurst Textiles in Greensboro and worked there until his retirement.
John grew up playing ice hockey in Illinois and continued his passion for the game at The Greensboro Ice House, playing in local leagues including the Sabres, Ice Holes, and Jets. He also played on the Carolina Classics team in the Gerihatricks tournaments in Laurel, MD; the team won a gold medal in the over 60 division and a silver medal as well.
He was an avid sports fan and loved watching hockey (Washington Capitals, Chicago Blackhawks), baseball (Chicago Cubs), NASCAR, football (Chicago Bears and Carolina Panthers), and Appalachian State’s college football team with his daughter, Megan.
John loved spending time with his family at Ocean Lakes Family Campground in Myrtle Beach, SC and with his friends at Sunset Beach, NC.
During retirement, he enjoyed playing golf with the Country Hills Open Golf League in Gibsonville, working in his flower and vegetable gardens, and hanging out with his “Little Buddy,” Niko rabbit.
John was preceded in death by his father, John S. Northcote II, mother, Shirley Shipe Northcote, and sister, Linda Northcote.
He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Melanie Northcote of Greensboro; his daughter, Megan Northcote and grand-rabbit, Niko, of Fredericksburg, VA; and his brother-in-law, Eric Thompson, of Burlington, NC.
John will be laid to rest in Guilford Memorial Park Cemetery in Greensboro.
