John Francis O'Brien Jr.

Born February 2, 1955, in Langdale, Alabama, to John F. O’Brien Sr. and Ann Elizabeth O’Brien, he graduated from Troy University. From an early age, John was known for his outgoing nature, quick wit, and ability to connect easily with others.

A man of strong faith, John was a devoted member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus, living his beliefs through service and care for others.

John was first and foremost a family man. He shared 50 loving years of marriage with his wife, Karen, and together they built a life centered on love, laughter, and family. He was a deeply involved and devoted father to John F. O’Brien III and Melissa Harrison, always present in their lives—coaching their teams, attending their events, supporting their interests, and celebrating their accomplishments. He took tremendous pride in his children and never hesitated to sacrifice his own time or needs for his family.

His devotion extended to his granddaughter, Elizabeth Harrison, who brought him great joy. He also cherished his nieces, nephews, and extended family.

John had a warm and engaging personality and a natural ability to put others at ease. He never met a stranger and could strike up a conversation with just about anyone. That love of people and gift for conversation served him well throughout his career in sales, which took him and his family across the country. Wherever he went, John had a way of connecting with people and making lasting relationships.

Athletic from an early age, John was an excellent swimmer and excelled in football, earning the opportunity to join the football program at Troy as a preferred walk-on. His love of sports continued throughout his life. As a father, he coached youth soccer, and he later played church league softball. Competitive and outspoken, he was never shy about sharing his opinions and was known for his confidence and humor. He also had a reputation for being every teacher’s challenge because he was convinced he knew more than they did—and, according to John, he was right most of the time.

John’s laughter, stories, unmistakable personality, and genuine joy in being with others will be deeply missed.

John is survived by his wife, Karen O’Brien; his children, John F. O’Brien III and Melissa Harrison (Jeffery); his granddaughter, Elizabeth Harrison; his brothers, Mike O’Brien (Anne), Richard O’Brien (Jaye), and Bob O’Brien (Alisa); and many extended family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ann and John O’Brien Sr.

A visitation will be held on Saturday, August 22, 2026, at 1:00 p.m., followed by a memorial service at 2:00 p.m. at Hanes Lineberry Funeral Home, 6000 West Gate City Boulevard, Greensboro, North Carolina 27407.

John’s family finds comfort in his strong faith, the full life he lived, and his enduring love for his family. His legacy lives on through the lessons he taught, the laughter he shared, and the love he gave so freely.

Rest in peace, Big John. You will be deeply missed and forever loved.
