

Mr. Herndon was born December 8, 1938 in Winston-Salem the son of the late William L. “Jack” Herndon Sr. and Dorothy Fulton Herndon. A graduate of Greensboro High School, Joe and his father owned and operated Herndon’s Shell Service Station on Asheboro St. He later worked as a sales and service consultant in the Automotive Parts Industry until retiring. He also served in the North Carolina National Guard. Joe was a member of AA for over 30 years. As an old car fanatic, Joe loved restoring classic cars such as his former 1957 Thunderbird. He traveled to many national car shows where his T-Bird often placed in the top 3. He also loved taking it to local car shows to be with his fellow car enthusiasts.
On June 12, 1960 he was married to the former Judith “Judy” Ann Taylor who survives of the home. Surviving in addition to his wife Judy is one daughter, Teresa Herndon Styron and husband Byron L. Styron, Jr. of Greensboro; two sisters, Nancy H. Frady and husband Robert “Bob” of Belleville, FL, Martha H. Dunsil of Greensboro and two brothers, William L. “Jack Jr.” Herndon and wife Marjorie of Greensboro, and James W. Herndon of Greensboro.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Thursday at the Hanes-Lineberry Funeral Home Sedgefield Chapel conducted by the Reverend Dr. Jay O. Lambeth. Interment will follow in Guilford Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the Hanes-Lineberry Funeral Home on Wednesday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
The family requests that memorials be made in Joe’s memory to the American Lung Association, 514 Daniels St., Raleigh, NC 27605 or to United Hospice, 9028 West D St., North Wilkesboro, NC 28659. The family would like to acknowledge and thank the 24 hour caregivers, CNAs DeAnna and Helena, from Griswold Home Care along with United Hospice for their assistance and support.
