Kathryn was born in Aurora, North Carolina, to Ralph Small Thompson and Sina Hooker Thompson. An only child, she was doted on by her parents, grandparents and other relatives who lived nearby in this small eastern North Carolina town. A lot was expected of her and she easily lived up to their expectations. She graduated from Aurora High School in 1937 as valedictorian.
Kathryn graduated from Greensboro College in 1941, where she was active in campus life, and was known for her beauty and high scholastic standing. She was president of Irving Society her senior year, that being one of the coveted posts, and voted most popular in her class.
While at Greensboro College into her life danced Richard C. Remmey, Jr. They were married in 1942, and for the next 44 years continued their love of dance, especially jitterbugging to Big Band music as often as possible. They could often be found encircled by their friends who love to watch their amazing footwork!
Their family soon grew with the births of their two children and Kathryn enjoyed her roles as wife and mother. She also enjoyed being active in her community, She was a member of the Atheneum Garden Club, the Junior League of Greensboro, and was a former member of the Greensboro Country Club.
She was a member of First Presbyterian Church where she was in the Rachel Circle (now Sally Huss Circle) and loved serving the Lord. One of her favorite activities was driving the seniors to Friendship Club. She was a woman of strong faith that guided her life, and sustained her throughout her many years. She was truly thankful to God for each and every day and for all of her many blessing.
Kathryn enjoyed crossword puzzles, reading for pleasure as well as her newspaper each day and staying current on what was happening in her community and the world. Even as macular degeneration limited her eyesight, she continued her reading with magnifying glasses of increasing magnification. All of this kept her mind sharp as a tack until her dying day. She loved watching ACC basketball, especially when N.C. State or Duke was playing – and when State won!
As her family grew to include grandchildren and great grandchildren, Kathryn loved being “grandmother” and then “gran” to her great grandchildren. She especially loved keeping up with their school and athletic activities, family beach trips to Ocean Isle, Christmas mornings with everyone gathered around her Christmas tree, and any occasion when everyone could be together. Hours before her passing, she was praising grandchildren’s parenting efforts and asking her great grands about recent ball games and beach trips.
Kathryn was a great friend and a caring neighbor. She had a beautiful smile and a graceful charm that drew people to her; young and old alike enjoyed being with her. She was petite in size but large in grace and fortitude. Cindy and the ladies at Looking Ahead kept her hair looking great and were very special friends she loved dearly. She was well taken care of by the best health care team. She never did look her age! She will be so missed! But she will live on in us and in many wonderful memories made with three generations of family and many friends who loved and were loved by her!
Kathryn was preceded in death by her parents and husband Richard Clinton Remmey Jr. She is survived by her daughter, Gayle Remmey Faucette and husband Dick, and son, Richard C. Remmey III, both of Browns Summit; grandchildren, George C. Knox Jr. and wife Jenny, Kathryn Blakemore and husband John, Ryan Thompson Remmey, Kim Councilman and husband Casey, Kelly Edwards and husband Matt; great grandchildren Caden, Caroline, Jagger, Jules, Hayley and Brooke, Jackson, Kinsey, Stella, and Greyson; three first cousins, a niece and three nephews, and many special friends.
Words fail to adequately express Kathryn’s family’s deepest gratitude to her caregivers, Hazel, Erica, LaTrinda, and June for their exceptional care that made it possible for her to live out her days in her own home with dignity and grace and so much love.
