

Larry Wesley Brown of Owings, Maryland, son of Lonzie L. and Anne L. Brown, Greensboro NC, passed away on May 15, 2024. He is survived by his daughter, Wendy Matthews and her husband Ray Matthews of Hudson, OH, and son Walter Brown and his wife Melinda Brown, of Gaithersburg, MD. He was a loving Papaw to two grandchildren, Jeffrey Matthews of Ferndale, MI and Holly Matthews of Hudson, OH. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Lynette Sicola, Greensboro, NC and her husband Chuck Sicola, of Greensboro, NC.
Larry was a graduate of Greensboro High School in 1957. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1961, followed by a Master of Science degree from the University of Maryland, College Park. He dedicated over 30 years of his career to NASA at the Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, retiring in 1999. His work focused on advanced astronomical research in the fields of differential imaging of comets and supernova remnants, as well as Fabry–Pérot imaging.
He was an active member of North Beach Union Church, in North Beach, MD. Alongside his beloved wife, Doris, he served as Director of the Chesapeake Community Chorus, which was dedicated to raising funds for hospice care through many musical performances. Larry had a lifelong love of trains and was a supporter of the Chesapeake Beach Railway Museum. He also found joy in raising Pembroke Welsh Corgis, participating in dog shows that included breed conformation, obedience, and tracking trials.
A graveside service will be held at 10:30 am on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, at Guilford Memorial Park, 6000 High Point Rd. Greensboro, NC 27409.
