Mr. Lawrence Lee Barbee, 75, passed away July 10, 2015 after a courageous battle with cancer. A memorial service to honor his life will be on Thursday, July 16 at 11 AM at Hanes-Lineberry Vanstory chapel with Pastor Terry Larsen officiating. Burial will be at Westminster Gardens with military honors. The family will receive friends beginning at 10 AM prior to the service.
Lawrence was born in Guilford County to the late John Paul and Mildred Holt Barbee. He served in the US Navy for four years, most of that aboard ships and after his naval service he worked for Carolina Steel. Lawrence then went to work for the City of Greensboro and remained there for approximately 35 years. He retired as a supervisor in the telecommunications department. His love of animals led him to become a part time investigator with the Humane Society. He was an active member of Gate City Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, operated the sound booth and accompanied the youth on several mission trips. He also attended South Side Baptist Church. He was married for thirty wonderful years to Shirley Price Barbee before her passing in 2006.
Lawrence was a quiet man who lived a full life. He listened more that he spoke which allowed him to hear the needs of other people and as a result he was a very generous man with his time and attention and cared a great deal about the welfare of others. For over ten years he was early to bed and early to rise so he could deliver newspapers. He loved the people and animals on his route and always made sure they were taken care of. In his spare time Lawrence enjoyed golfing, and relaxing in his recliner watching a good movie. His family brought him so much joy and he especially enjoyed the company of children.
He is survived by his sister, Jeanette Barbee Edwards of Jamestown; step daughter, Teresa Davidson of Greensboro; nephews, Randy Edwards and wife Carolyn and Ken Edwards and wife Char; several great nieces and nephews; 4 step grandchildren; seven step great grandchildren; and his feline companion, “Miss Shirley”. His precious dog “Puddles” died in 2012.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro or the ASPCA. Online condolences may be made at www.haneslineberryfuneralhomes.com.
