Lorraine was born in Zusmarshausen, Germany, the daughter of the late Lawrence Tucker and Agnes (Brendle) Tucker of Mesa, Arizona. She was the oldest of five siblings. At just four years old, Lorraine came to the United States with her family, first settling in West Virginia while her father studied engineering on the GI Bill and her mother learned English and embraced life in the U.S.
Lorraine grew up loving the German traditions, food, and culture her mother shared with her—traditions she proudly passed on to her own children and grandchildren. As her father’s career advanced, the family lived in several places, including Kansas, eventually settling in Wilson, New York. It was there that Lorraine began her nursing studies at Deaconess Hospital, earned her RN, and met her husband, Thomas (“Tom”) Neill. They were married in 1969 at Our Lady of Victory Shrine & Basilica in Lackawanna, New York.
Lorraine devoted her entire professional life to healthcare. She was known for her strong work ethic, kindness, and unwavering commitment to others. Family dinners were often filled with stories from the hospital—stories so vivid that none of her children chose to follow her into nursing. Lorraine never stayed in one place professionally; she worked in hospitals, home healthcare, dialysis units, and burn care. In the early 1990s, after her children were raised, she returned to school and proudly earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from UNCG in 1997. Education was always deeply important to her—she believed it was the key to success, and her graduation was a proud moment for the entire family.
Lorraine worked tirelessly for her family’s well-being, carefully balancing her demanding career so she could remain present for those she loved most. In her free time, she found joy in sewing—creating matching outfits for her daughters and handmade clothes for their Barbie dolls. She especially treasured baking traditional Easter bread and preparing a basket of food to be blessed at church, a meaningful tradition she carried on with devotion.
Lorraine, Tom and family were active members of the Foundation for International Cooperation, warmly welcoming exchange students into their home. Their involvement spanned many years, including serving as presidents of the organization and traveling to Ecuador, Peru, and Spain. Though Lorraine knew only a handful of Spanish words, her kindness and gracious spirit transcended language—she was welcomed and loved wherever she went.
Each summer after moving to North Carolina, Lorraine made it a priority to rent a house at the beach so the family could spend treasured time together. She especially cherished those moments with her grandchildren, and her love for the beach brought her great happiness.
Faith was central to Lorraine’s life. She ensured her children attended Catholic school, and the church remained an important part of her life from childhood through her later years.
After retiring, Lorraine truly flourished. She spent meaningful time in Iowa and created lasting memories traveling with her closest girlfriends to France, Germany, and England—never missing an opportunity to attend the beloved Philadelphia Flower Show. The Greensboro Council of Garden Clubs became her home away from home, and her circle of friendships continued to grow. She served as president of the Anniversary Club and the Council, became a certified flower judge, and was active in the Herb Society and Lecture League. She brought beauty and care to Our Lady of Grace as the flower coordinator of the Altar and Flower Committee and gave her time and talents faithfully to the parish community.
Lorraine adored gardening—there wasn’t a plant she didn’t want to own. Her home garden expanded each year, and she took great pride in its beauty. She participated in flower shows and won many first-place awards at the Carolina Classic Fair in Winston Salem, NC. The family is deeply grateful to the ladies of the Greensboro Council of Garden Clubs for filling Lorraine’s life with friendship and joy.
Lorraine touched the lives of everyone who had the honor of knowing her. Her selflessness, warmth, and generous spirit will be remembered always. She leaves behind a legacy of love, strength, and compassion that lives through all who loved her.
Lorraine was a proud and devoted mother to her three children for whom she lived her life, Lisa (Neill) Reyna (Joel), Sheila (Neill) Shearin, and Thomas W. Neill Jr. (Melissa). She was also a cherished grandmother to Gabrielle, Morgan, Samantha, Jaida, Olivia, Abigail, McKenna, Christina, Khylen, Camila, and Torin.
A Catholic Mass will be held in her honor on Monday, February 16, at 11:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church 2203 West Market St. Greensboro, NC 27403. A reception, generously provided by the parish, will follow at the Parish Life Center, with burial at 2:30 p.m. at Forest Lawn Cemetery 3901 Forest Lawn Drive, Greensboro, NC 27455.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorial contributions be made in Lorraine Neill’s honor to Greensboro Beautiful’s Memorial/Honor Bench Program at https://greensborobeautiful.org/donate/ or to Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church.
