Ludwick M. (Lem) Clymer, 95 years old, went home to the Lord on May 20, 2018. Lem was born in Greensboro, NC, the son of Hugh Holt and Dorothy B. Clymer. He graduated from Greensboro High School and entered Duke University in 1940. In 1942, Lem married his high school sweetheart, Dale Warmath, also of Greensboro.
Lem was a vivid example of God’s grace in a man of faith. A proud veteran of WWII, Lem left college and enlisted in the Army Air Corp as a B-17 bomber pilot flying 35 missions over Germany. After the war, Lem returned to Duke to finish his education and soon went to work for Equitable Securities Corp in Nashville, TN, rising rapidly in the ranks to Vice President. During those years, he and Dale adopted three children, Tom, Steven and Lee. In 1969, Equitable went through a merger and Lem left to become a Senior Vice President of Holiday Inns, Inc., retiring several years later as this international company’s President and CEO.
Although he was a respected businessman, he would like to be remembered for his passionate faith in Jesus Christ. He loved his Savior and the work he was privileged to do in the churches he attended. He assumed the Executive Administrative duties of a large staff at Second Presbyterian Church in Memphis, TN, for several years during their period without a Senior Pastor where he also served as an Elder and Bible Study leader. Upon retirement, he was extremely active at Hilton Head Presbyterian Church in Hilton Head, SC. where he was a member of a men’s prayer group every week for 20 years. He was also an affiliate member of Banner Elk Presbyterian Church in Banner Elk, NC, where he and his wife spent their summers. He was always eager to discuss His Savior and read his Bible. One of Lem’s greatest joys was sharing his love of faith in Christ with prisoners through Kairos Prison Ministries. At the time of his death, he taught a Sunday School Class at Buffalo Presbyterian in Greensboro where his son, Tom is pastor. Aside from church work, Lem was an avid golfer and bridge player.
Lem was preceded in death by his wife Dale just short of their 70th wedding anniversary in 2015. He loved his family and provided a great Christian legacy in the lives of his children, Thomas Hugh Clymer (Katherine) of Greensboro, John Steven Clymer, currently serving with Samaritan’s Purse in Louisiana and Dorothy Lee Councill (Tommy) also of Greensboro. In addition, Lem and Dale have six grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren and 3 great, great grandchildren. Lem rejoices to go to the Lord to make room for you to live to the praise of the glory of God through Jesus Christ.
