Lura Weaver Lyle, 94, daughter of Henry John Weaver and Melania Musso Weaver, was born in Memphis, TN on November 28, 1928. She went home to the Lord on Wednesday, November 1, 2023 where she will keep loving watch over five surviving children, seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 55 years, John Flowers Lyle, daughter Ruth Bivens and sister Shirley Evans.
Lura lived a life rooted in her Catholic faith. She graduated from St. Mary’s High School in 1946 and married John on June 14, 1952 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Memphis. She was a long time member of Our Lady of Grace Church in Greensboro. Lura was a greeter at the morning Mass and a member of the OLG Women’s Club, the prayer shawl crocheting committee, the Ladies Auxiliary of the Knights Columbus through which she participated in Operation Lamb.
After her marriage, Lura went with her husband to Atlanta where they lived for 19 years and all their children were born. The family moved to Greensboro in 1971. An avid reader, Lura enjoyed walking to the old Downtown Greensboro library and would often be seen reading on her front porch. She kept her family, especially John, supplied in cookies and her Halloween cupcakes were legendary in the neighborhood. She and her husband were charter members of the Club 75 Dance Club and enjoyed ballroom dancing. Listening to waltzes always brought back good memories.
Lura was truly blessed. To cherish her memory, she leaves her children Nancy Carothers, Margaret Gayle (Steve deceased), Patricia Bean (Mike), Elizabeth Almond (Barry deceased) and Walter Lyle; her grandchildren Philip Carothers (Emily), Rachael Palmer (Joe), John Carothers, Jonathan Gayle (Sarah), Matthew Gayle, Emily Cline (Chris) and Bethany Bivens, her great grandchildren, her sister-in-law Bettye Walker, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Lura would like to thank her Home Instead caregivers and the librarians at the Greensboro Public Library who regularly supplied her with books. The family would like to thank the people who often visited Mother at her home these last few years (You know who you are!) and the hospice caregivers of Authoracare Collective of Greensboro.
In lieu of flowers, Lura requests you make a donation to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis.
A memorial mass will be held at 10 am on Monday, November 6, 2023 at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church. Inurnment will be at 2 pm at Westminster Gardens. The family will receive friends on Sunday, November 5, 2023 at Hanes Lineberry Funeral Home North Elm Chapel.
