Luther Hanibal (LH) Britt, II, was born in Wayne County on January 25, 1941, to Luther R. Britt and Sarah F. Best Britt. He graduated from Jamestown High School and enlisted in the U.S. National Guard at the young age of 15. He served there honorably and, in the U.S. Army, where he enjoyed his role as a cook. He married Wilma J. Kinney in 1961 and had two children with her: Dawn Renee and Clyde James (Jimmy). After the Army, LH held various service jobs in the Greensboro, Gastonia, Murrells Inlet and Myrtle Beach areas. He enjoyed beach camping and golfing, which was his all-time favorite. Throughout his retirement years, he spent much of his time with his pets, who loved him dearly, house-sitting and visiting and caring for his neighbors.
While living in Greensboro, LH suffered an aneurism and became one of the first patients in North Carolina to receive an experimental surgery which cured him. During his recovery, the doctors discovered he was left-handed instead of how he was taught to be through school - right-handed.
After the death of Wilma, he re-married twice with the last marriage being to Linda McCarter, with whom he maintained a friendship until his passing.
LH is survived by his son, Clyde James (Jimmy) and his daughter-in-law Jennifer Britt, his brother, Aime (Ray) Britt, his four grandchildren, Brittany N. Palladino, Dallas B. Britt, Joseph L. (Luke) Palladino and Hannahlee T. McCullough, and by his great-grandchildren, Milo B. Britt and Lorelai S. Britt. He is also survived by his two nephews, Richie R. Britt and Michael S. Britt.
A private remembrance service is scheduled to be held in Greensboro on Aug. 20. This will be a casual gathering to share memories and stories of LH’s time on Earth and to celebrate his life.
