Marion Charles “Chuck” Scott, 78, passed away on Saturday, January 29, 2022 at his residence, lovingly surrounded by family. Chuck was born in Greensboro, NC, the youngest child of John Daniel Scott and Frances DeZern Scott.
His parents and siblings, Jean Scott Suttles, Dr. John Daniel Scott, Jr., and Harry Tull Scott preceded him in death.
He is survived by his wife, Ashley Elmore Staton Scott, his daughters, Sidney Draughn (Dean) of Severna Park, MD, and their children Dean III, Charles, and Peter; Susan Dowell (Gary) of Seattle, WA, and her children Rachel and Max Painter; and Christy Reid of Huntersville, NC, and her children, Caroline, Davis, and Carter.
Chuck graduated from Walter Hines Page High School in 1961 where he excelled in athletics. He played Baseball and Varsity Basketball all three years at Page and was a member of the Monogram Club in addition to various other clubs. He attended Guilford College where he graduated in 1966 with a BA in Economics. Among his many achievements during his college career, most notably for Basketball where he lettered, he received the WCOG Award for Leadership, the Senior Athletic Award, All-Carolinas Conference and All-District Honors and was inducted into the Guilford College Hall of Fame in 1991.
After a long career in textiles, Chuck retired to enjoy time at Wrightsville Beach with family, fishing with faithful companion Rugger by his side, and golf with friends from Page and Guilford. A favorite was the annual Page-Grimsley Golf Tournament. A member of First Presbyterian Church, Chuck loyally participated with Ashley in the food collection for Greensboro Urban Ministry, Meals for Hope, and the holiday bell ringing for Salvation Army. Chuck was an ambassador in his Fountain Manor community, doing custom work, repair, caregiving, whatever was asked and needed, always done with his radiant smile, generous heart, and gifted talents. With Ashley, they shared their love of cooking, gardening, golfing, evening patio time with Winnie and her tennis balls, hummingbirds, bucket list travel destinations, and being with family, his and hers, who became theirs.
Chuck’s greatest delight was in spending time with his eight grandchildren and he took immense pride in their achievements, personally, academically, and in sports. Their faces would always light up when they saw their “Bamm.” Equally, he adored his three daughters and the fine, accomplished women and exceptional mothers they had become.
A Memorial Service and Celebration of Life was held earlier this month. Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church (Neil Dunnavant Hunger Ministries), 617 North Elm Street, Greensboro, North Carolina 27401, www.fpcgreensboro.org; or Guilford College-Athletic Annual Fund/Quaker Club, 5800 West Friendly Avenue, Greensboro, North Carolina 27410, www.guilford.edu; or to a charity of your choice.
