Marion was born in Robeson, ME to Vida and Donald Sanborn on Sept. 24, 1922 and was raised on a potato farm there through High School. Her father passed away in 1934, but her mother and two sisters continued running the farm until the middle of World War II. During the War, Marion and her older sister Doris moved to Washington, DC where she was employed working for the Small-arms Munitions Division until the end of the war. Before the War’s end her mother and oldest sister Lenora also moved there, too. It was there that she met James T. Hampton, her partner for life, where he was stationed at the conclusion of the war. On June 4, 1945 they were married. It was a marriage that would last for almost 64 years until James’ death in March 2009. In 1955, she and James, along with their first child Ron, moved to Endicott, NY, where their second child Peggy was born in 1958. In 1963 they moved to Poughkeepsie, NY and two years later would relocate to Cary, NC, where they lived for the next 40 years. Jim and Marion finally moved to Greensboro, NC in 2006 to be closer to their children and grandchildren for their final years.
Marion grew up in the Baptist Faith, but was most recently a member of First Presbyterian Church in Greensboro. She had many varied interest and activities in her life, particularly church activities where she sang in various Church Choirs throughout her years, and served with Jim as Youth Leaders and Sunday School Teachers in several churches. Marion was devoted mother serving as a Den mother for Cub Scouts and Brownies and always was actively involved or supporting her children’s activities as they grew up. She enjoyed Square Dancing, bowling, golf, loved yard work, family vacations, and was an avid UNC Tarheel fan. Most of all, she loved spending time with her Grand-children as she and James made countless trips between Greensboro and Cary over the years attending many of their Grand-children's sporting events, school activities, and other special events in their lives.
Marion is pre-deceased by her husband James T. Hampton, and her two sisters, Doris and Lenora and their husbands Jack and Larry, She is survived her son Ron Hampton and wife Becky of Greensboro; daughter Peggy Bagwell and husband Jim, also of Greensboro; and 4 Grand-children, Elizabeth Hampton of Brooklyn, NY; Caroline Hampton, attending Appalachian St. University; Tyler Bagwell, attending UNC-Chapel Hill and Austin Bagwell a Jr. at Page HS.
