Marion L. Robinson was born in Brighton, England, the 5th of 6 children born to George and Elizabeth (Fry) Hibberd. Her father, George, was a furniture maker and the family heritage in the furniture industry continues to this day.
Marion was educated at Church of England schools in Brighton, but, like most of her generation, her life was disrupted by the outbreak of WW II.
In 1941, Marion was married to Leslie Robinson, hours before he was deployed to active service in Europe and North Africa. Marion did her share in the war as a volunteer fire fighter for the duration of the war.
Les returned home in 1946 and later that year their only son, Brian was born.
A lifelong churchgoer, Marion soon became active in a wide variety of charitable and service activities and she always had a special knack of persuading others to become involved in moving her projects forward. She also found time for a career in appliance sales and received many commendations and prizes for her selling ability.
Marion was an avid gardener and flower arranger, becoming a Master Gardener Flower Show judge. She was a frequent blue-ribbon winner at the annual Boston Flower Show. She traveled widely, giving demonstrations and lecturing on the art of flower arranging. In partnership with her daughter-in-law, Eileen, she was requested to provide floral arrangements for an official visit to Boston by Princess Anne. Marion and Les moved from England the United States in 1975, firstly to Wenham, Massachusetts and then, in 1996, to Greensboro. She was a faithful communicant at All Saints Church, became active in Red Hat, both Anniversary and Sedgefield Garden Clubs, and was President of the Greensboro Council of Garden Clubs for several years.
Marion is survived by her son Brian Robinson and daughter-in-law Eileen of Greensboro, grandson Matthew Robinson, his wife Stacey and great-grandchildren Colin and Campbell, of Salem, MA and by grandson Neill Robinson, his wife Karen and great-grandchildren Emily and Lauren of Summerfield, NC.
A service of Remembrance will be held at All Saints Episcopal Church, Wayne Road, Greensboro on Tuesday, October 10th at 4:00 pm followed by tea in the Fellowship Hall where the Family will receive condolences.
The family has requested donations in lieu of flowers to one of Marion’s favorite charities, St Jude’s Children Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or Hospice of Greensboro, 2500 Summit Ave., Greensboro, NC 27405.
