Greensboro: Marjorie Copeland Henry Hobbs passed away on July 20, 2015. Born in Spartanburg, SC to Lillie Sellars Henry and Grover Cleveland Henry on July 2, 1917, she was the middle of five children. She grew up in Clifton, SC and met her future husband, Albert Jones Hobbs, in high school. She attended Converse College in Spartanburg for two years before beginning a brief but rewarding career as an office manager.
On November 22, 1941, she and “Jonesie” Hobbs were married. They had three daughters: Joan Hobbs Paster (Summit, NJ), Jean Hobbs Davison (Greensboro, NC) and Janet Hobbs Buckner (Walterboro, SC), who were the pride and joy of her life.
While raising her family, Marjorie was active in her church, First Presbyterian of Spartanburg, where she and her husband taught and counseled the members of the high school youth program for years. She also was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels, and was an avid and formidable bridge player, a passion she excelled in until just recently.
Marjorie has been an active and vibrant person for her whole life. To celebrate her 90th birthday she took an adventure trip to Alaska. She also was famous for being a hilariously funny and loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother during the family’s annual trips to the beach each summer. The family cherishes hundreds of photos of her hugging children, riding in a wheelbarrow, toasting with a glass of wine or bottle of beer, and shining in the family’s annual talent show. She moved to Greensboro to be near her daughter, Jean, in 2010, and in recent years took up painting watercolor landscapes.
Marjorie is survived by her three daughters, 2 sons-in-law, 6 grandchildren, 2 step-grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, and 4 step-great-grandchildren, all of whom know her lovingly as “Ma.”
The family wishes to thank the wonderful and caring professionals at the Assisted Living Center at Abbotswood (Greensboro), at White Stone Masonic & Eastern Star Community (Greensboro), and at Hospice Greensboro. You all helped to make her last years comfortable and meaningful, and we can’t imagine this journey without you.
The family will visit with friends at 10:30 AM Saturday, July 25, in the Blair Hagan room at First Presbyterian Church Greensboro, followed by a Service of the Resurrection celebrating Marjorie’s life in the Church’s Chapel at 11:00 AM. A columbarium commitment ceremony will be held at 4:00 PM at the Glenwood Heritage Chapel Mausoleum of Greenlawn Memorial Gardens in Spartanburg, where Marjorie’s ashes will be placed with those of her husband.
Memorial gifts may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 617 N. Elm St. Greensboro, NC 27401; White Stone Masonic & Eastern Star Community, 700 S. Holden Rd., Greensboro, NC 27407;, and/or Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro, 2500 Summit Ave, Greensboro, NC 27505.
