Funeral services will be held on April 5, 2013 at 3:00pm at Temple Emanuel on Greene Street and will be conducted by Rabbi Andy Koren. Burial will follow in the Greensboro Hebrew Cemetery on High Point Road.
A licensed pilot before he had his driver's license, Martin pursued his interest in aviation while serving his country during World War II. He was a flight instructor for Army Air Corps (predecessor to the Air Force) cadets, engaged in submarine surveillance as a First Lieutenant in the Civil Air Patrol, and was a Flight Officer in the Army Air Corps Ferry Command that delivered new planes from manufacturing plants.
After the war, Martin enjoyed a long and very successful career of 60 years in Greensboro with Jewel Box Stores Corporation and its successor Carlyle and Company Jewelers, ultimately as Executive Vice President and a member of the Board of Directors. Much of his career was in corporate real estate. Martin achieved the designation of Master of Corporate Real Estate (M.C.R.) by The Institute for Corporate Real Estate Executives - International, and he served two years as Treasurer of the National Association of Corporate Real Estate Executives (NACORE).
In addition to his busy career, Martin enjoyed contributing to a wide variety of community activities. For twenty years, he was on the Board of Trustees of Temple Emanuel, and he served as President and Treasurer during a portion of his board tenure. For over 37 years, he was a member of Summit Rotary Club and served on the Board of Directors for several years. Martin was a founding member of the Sherwood Swim and Racquet Club and served as the Club's first President. From 1985 until he was too ill to continue in 2007, Martin was secretary and treasurer of the G.I.R.L.S. (Granville International Relations and Lecturing Society) men’s walking club comprised of Greensboro professionals who gather daily to enjoy healthy exercise and friendly conversation.
Martin is survived by his wife of 65 years, Shirley Finkelstein Bernstein and their six children whom they lovingly raised on Justamere Farm in Summerfield, NC: Susan Bernstein (Josh Pruzansky), Rachel Strauss (Sidney), Steve (Gail), Maggie Heller (Steven), David (Eddy), and Sarah Bernstein; ten grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and his sister Norma Kahn. His joyous sense of humor and compassion for others will always be remembered.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Temple Emanuel at 1129 Jefferson Road in Greensboro, NC 27410 or to Alzheimer's North Carolina, Inc. at 1305 Navaho Drive - Suite 101 in Raleigh, NC 27609.
