

Mary was born on September 17, 1926 in Huntington, W.V., to the late Thomas Dandelet and late Helen Tobin Dandelet. She attended Saint Joseph’s High School where she was honored to be crowned May Queen in her senior year. She went on to graduate from Marshall University in 1948 with her bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and was a member of the Sigma Sigma Sigma Sorority. While attending Marshall University she met the love of her life, Hampton Austin, and they were married on December 27, 1948.
They relocated to Washington, D.C. and then in 1960 to Indian Harbor Beach, Florida where they raised six children. She was an active member of the Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church in Canova Beach and sat as president of their religious education program for many years. For 15 years Mary was an adjunct teacher for the Brevard County School system where she was well-loved by students and faculty alike.
In 1977, Mary and Hampton relocated with their children to Greensboro, N.C., which remained her home for 39 years. It was during this period of her life that Mary and her husband Hampton were fortunate enough to have the opportunity to travel the world; even riding a camel around the pyramids of Egypt.
Mary was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who devoted her life to God and her family. She faced each day with grace and gratitude no matter what it brought. She embodied strength, beauty and humility.
Mary was predeceased by her daughter, Mary Rebecca Austin Intravaia, her son, Michael Edward Austin, and by her beloved husband, Hampton Lambert Austin, to whom she was married for 67 years.
Mary is survived by her son Thomas Keith Austin and grandson Christopher; daughter Cindy A. Michalowski and granddaughter Mary; son Philip J. Austin, his wife Kelly and their children Rachel and Ryan; Kathleen A. Lawrence, her husband Terry and their sons Stephen, Nicholas (his wife Rachel) and Benjamin; and grandchildren Joseph Intravaia (wife Annie) and Johnny Intravaia (wife Mandy). Mary has six great-grandchildren, Kenneth, Joseph and Maryann Intravaia, Dominic and Lydia Intravaia and Emerson Lawrence. She is also survived by her sisters Bernadine D. Dunn, Patricia D. Lucas, and brother Thomas Dandelet, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Mary exemplified a life well lived.
Her family would like to thank the entire staff of Frensnius Dialysis Center of Adams Farm, as well as the Sisters of The Poor Servants of the Mother of God of Maryfield in High Point.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:30 a.m. Monday at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church 4145 Johnson St., High Point, NC 27265 officiated by Father Vincent E. Smith O.S.F.S. The family will receive friends at the church from 10:30 a.m. until service time. Private family interment services will be held.
