Mary A. Schy
November 9, 1928 – February 1, 2018
Mary Adelaide MacDonald Schy, 89, of Burlington and Mebane, passed peacefully on Monday, February 1st, at the Hospice and Palliative Care Center. She was a kind and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother whose life centered around her family. Mary was a talented artist, and generously shared her beautiful paintings with family and friends. In her later years she continued to enjoy time with her family, loved to play card games and Scrabble, and enjoyed classic movies. Born November 9, 1928 in Russellville, Arkansas, Mary graduated from Appleton High School (Wisconsin), and completed her training as a Registered Nurse at Grant Hospital in Chicago. She was a compassionate and dedicated nurse, providing care for patients in hospitals and a nursing home in the Greater Chicago and Phoenix areas during her 45-year career. While a nursing student, Mary met and married Morris ”Maury” Schy, her husband of 54 years. They lived in the Chicago area for 28 years, until moving to Arizona upon Maury’s retirement. Mary continued to work until retiring at 62, enjoying the sunny climate of Arizona until she and Maury moved to Mebane, North Carolina in 2000 to be closer to family on the east coast. After Maury’s passing in 2005, Mary lived independently in her home for the next nine years. Due to declining health, Mary joined the Twin Lakes Community, and received wonderful care from the staff at Coble Health. She always had a beautiful smile that could light up a room, and continued to enjoy her family and friends up to the end of her life. Mary is survived by her sons, Steve (Nancy) and Bill (Lisa), grandchildren Aaron, Michael (Sheryl), Kati and Karyn, and great grandchildren Sabine, Sam and Sophie. She was predeceased by her daughter Nancy and husband Maury. She is also survived by numerous beloved nieces and nephews and their children. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, 11:00 am at Hanes Lineberry Vanstory Chapel with burial to follow at Greensboro Hebrew Cemetery.
