Mary Glasgow Troy, 92, passed away on March 26, 2019 at Verra Spring Assisted Living in Greensboro. Mary was born on December 13, 1926 in Central Falls, Randolph County, North Carolina, the daughter of the late Charles Ernest Glasgow and Lula Williams Glasgow. She grew up in that community where she attended local schools and graduated from Asheboro High School in 1943.
Mary married Edgar Allen Troy on October 12, 1946, after his service in the United States Army during World War II. They thereafter moved to Greensboro and established a family.
Mary is survived by her daughters, Diane Troy Campbell (Frank) and Elizabeth Allen Troy, of Greensboro; and grandson, Leary J. Troy and fiancé, Jennifer Alfieri, of Pleasant Garden. Mary’s husband and a sister, Jewel Glasgow Kirkman, predeceased her.
Mary worked in the advertising department of Sears Roebuck and Co. for a number of years and then became the first female insurance adjuster for Allstate Insurance in Guilford County, where she was employed for over 20 years. She was a member of the La Sertoma Club, Greensboro Hiking Club, American Cancer Society, and the American Business Women’s Association, where she was its member of the year in 1985. Mary was widowed at age 51, after which she became an active community volunteer. She volunteered for over 35 years at Wesley Long Hospital and was a longtime volunteer at Weaver House and Mobile Wheels, until she was no longer able to serve. Mary also enjoyed travelling throughout the continental United States and Europe as well as Hawaii and Central America.
The family wishes to thank Dr. W. Spencer Tilley, Jr., his nurses and staff; the doctors, nurses and staff of Moses Cone and Wesley Long Hospitals; the staff of Heritage Greens and Verra Spring Assisted Living; and Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro for their care of Mary in recent years.
There will be a private graveside service for immediate family at Westminster Gardens on Friday, March 29, 2019 led by the Reverend Butch Sherrill of Westminster Presbyterian Church. In lieu of memorial gifts, the family requests that those wishing to honor Mary’s memory do something nice for someone else.
