Maureen carried her Irish wit, charm, and temperament throughout the raising of her 6 children. She was a young mother in the 1960s who guided her children through a whirl of sports, pets, girlfriends, boyfriends and eating her out of house and home. All the while she was a Red Cross volunteer, substitute teacher, school nurse and Special Education teacher.
While her last two children were graduating high school, she completed her Master’s Degree in drug and alcohol abuse therapy to direct the Family Service Center on Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point , N.C. where she helped Marines and their families navigate the turmoil of living in the Corps.
After retiring to Las Vegas with her husband she was active at St. John Newman’s Catholic church as a eucharistic minister and leader of the food bank. She was always active in the church; a “good Catholic girl” as her Mother always said. Maureen was also an avid reader, crossword puzzler and slot machine queen.
Her family history spans the era of the Erie Canal in Port Jervis, through the Erie Railroad. Family landmarks include the Hotel Carrol and Grey’s funeral home. She grew up with cousins Jack and Tommy Carrol, Art Grey, Kevin, Jimmy, Richard and Maryanne Baird Armour and Joe and Jack McAndrew.
At 92 she had outlived most of her friends and relatives, certainly anyone she grew up with. She finished her life as the undisputed matriarch and the last member of her generation. She is survived by her six children, Jon, Carl, Eric, Matt, Kurt, and Kara Zander, two daughters in law, 10 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Lillian McAndrew Clancy, her husband, Col. Hans Zander, her sister Pat Clancy Schauer and brother-in-law Peter Schauer and two grandchildren, Jason and Katie Zander.
Maureen’s funeral mass will be held at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, 2715 Horse Pen Creek Road Greensboro, NC, with internment alongside her husband in the National Cemetery at Salisbury, NC on March 28, 2025.
May the road rise up to meet you.
May the wind always be at your back,
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
And rain fall soft upon your fields.
And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of his hand.
