

Maurice Edward Schwartz, 86, of Greensboro, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 14, 2026. Maurice was surrounded by his wife, Eugenia, sons, Ben and Adam, and daughter-in-law, Allison. He also leaves behind his beloved grandsons, Michael and Benjamin, and brothers, Tommy and Jeff.
Maurice served as a professor of chemistry at the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana, where he lived and taught for over 30 years. He also served as an elder at First Presbyterian Church in Greensboro and was an active volunteer with Bikesboro and Hot Dish & Hope.
Maurice was an avid bicyclist and he made wine, vinegar, hot sauce, various spice cookies, and home-cured guanciale. He was a devoted reader of Dante. He was a devoted, respected, and beloved husband and father.
Maurice was born in 1939 in Laurinburg, North Carolina, to Sims and Dora Schwartz. His interest in chemistry flourished while at Presbyterian College and he earned his PhD from Vanderbilt University in 1965. He continued postdoctoral research at Oxford University in England and Princeton University. Maurice also had appointments at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, the University of California, Berkeley, and Trinity College Dublin.
Besides his family, Maurice leaves behind countless friends, former students, fellow cyclists, Italian speakers, and fellow members of First Presbyterian. All have been touched by his curiosity, grace, intelligence, and generosity.
A memorial service will be held at 5:00 p.m., on Friday June 19, 2026, at Virginia Somerville Sutton Theatre at Well-Spring Community. Hanes Lineberry North Elm Chapel is assisting the family.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hot Dish & Hope at First Presbyterian Church in Greensboro.
