Meg was born in Oceanside, NY to high school teachers, Gregory Monahan (1931-2015) and Philomena (Fannie) Monahan née Longo (1930-1973). Meg grew up in the town of Dix Hills, Long Island, NY. After graduating from Half Hollow Hills High School West (class of 1989), Meg attended Duke University (class of 1993). The friendships that were made and the experiences she had at Duke, including the energy and excitement that came with the University’s first two NCAA men’s basketball championships, fostered a lifelong love of the University and its many sports programs. She pursued graduate studies at Stony Brook University before entering Stony Brook University School of Medicine (class of 2000). She completed her residency in Pediatric Medicine at Stony Brook University Hospital (2003), followed by a fellowship in Allergy and Immunology at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, in Philadelphia, PA and Nemours Children’s Hospital, in Wilmington, DE (2005).
Meg spent the last 2 decades of her life in Greensboro, NC, where she made incredible friends, worked alongside the greatest partners and staff at LeBauer Allergy and Asthma, connected with wonderful patients in both Greensboro and Burlington, and integrated herself into the world of her children, often through involvement with their school, Greensboro Montessori School.
Meg’s life was impacted by the loss of her mother and brother at a very early age. Yet her resilience, iron will, and grit never overshadowed her kindness and commitment to others. She had a huge heart with charity and kindness being a part of her core essence. As a teen, she volunteered her time and offered assistance in many ways. As a college student she tutored underprivileged girls in Durham, NC and volunteered at the Duke University Hospital. Between college and medical school, Meg spent a year in the Dominican Republic helping impoverished people from the countryside obtain medical care in Santo Domingo. While attending medical school, she volunteered at a women’s shelter on Long Island, NY. As an allergist, Meg helped thousands of people in the Piedmont area of North Carolina.
Meg was a woman of remarkable intellect and an even greater heart. She was an accomplished doctor whose kindness, acceptance, empathy, and humor allowed her to make deep connections with people very quickly. Meg was much more likely to ask questions and to listen than to talk about herself, an innate quality that helped to make people feel heard. Meg was an unwaveringly loyal friend who maintained relationships over decades, always making time for people she loved. She had an extraordinary memory, a razor-sharp wit, and an uncanny ability to recall lyrics from an endless catalogue of both recent and decades old songs. Her curiosity and adventurous spirit fueled her love of people and travel. She loved her daughters more than anything in the world.
In addition to her parents, Meg was preceded in death by her older brother, Gregory Monahan Jr. (1973)
Meg is survived by her husband of 23 years, Timothy Whelan; her daughters, Kate Whelan and Anna Whelan; and her brother, Juan Monahan.
A remembrance service will be held at 10 AM on Saturday, March 22, 2025 at St. Benedict Catholic Church - 109 W Smith St, Greensboro, NC 27401. Family and friends are invited to gather at the Whelan’s home from 12:00 to 3:00 PM that afternoon.
Instead of flowers which may be limited at church during Lent, please consider a donation to Greensboro Montessori School, where her daughters have attended school since 2014 and where Meg served on the board of trustees since 2021. https://gms.org/give
