Meredith Ann "Tudie” Malcolm Wallace passed from this earthly life while I held Her, she took her last breath June 4th, 2026, three days shy of her 90th Birthday. Mama was born on June 7th, 1936, to the late Bruce Malcolm and Alice Landers Malcolm in Huntington WV.
As a kid mama was a scrapper, she told me she loved to fight. She told me she would go to the playground and pull kids out of the swing to pick a fight. Being brought up Catholic she enjoyed being enrolled at St. Josephs Catholic School from elementary to High School. While attending junior high, she was promoted to varsity cheerleader a year early because of her loud voice and cheering skills. Always cheering for her brother Charles Bennett Malcolm until he was fouled too hard, at which time her and her sister Mary Jane Malcolm would come down from the stands with their finger in someone’s face.
Mama also enjoyed ice skating at the Marshall Field House on weekends where she met my father. Pop tackled her into a puddle of melted ice, which started an almost 70-year relationship, they were married for 63 years. They got married on December 22, 1956, after Pop joined the army for a 2-year stent in Germany. Grandma told my father “Without a GED, you will not marry my daughter”, at that time that was the only way to get one. My dad left Huntington for 16 weeks of bootcamp in Fort Knox Kentucky. While attending bootcamp, he went AWOL 16 weekends in a row and hitchhiked back to Huntington to see Mama because he knew tank drills awaited him in Germany and cold nights without her in A FART SACK (sleeping bag), sleeping on the snow. When he returned mama got pregnant on her honeymoon (come on Pop), which started our Wallace Clan. Having 4 children, mama was the best mother any kid could ask for. The strongest woman I know. You might call her hovering, but she was just protecting us.
In 1977, they made the decision to pack up the family and move to Greensboro for a better opportunity for Pop. Mama always said she wished she never left her family in Huntington, but this was truly the best thing that could have happened to us. Mama said as long as there was a good catholic church and school in Greensboro, she was fine. Enter St. Pius X Catholic Church, where my sister and I attended. While at St Pius, my mother was a soccer & basketball Mom and of course, a cheerleading coach. Not only a coach but a state championship winning coach 2 years in a row, achieving this was easy, With cheerleaders such as the Weavers and Koury girls along with many others. Mama was also instrumental in having black added to the gold & white school colors, even going as high as asking the bishop of Charlotte permission because she wasn't getting much cooperation from the head nun and priest at the time.
She was a room mother, hall monitor, lunch lady and a substitute teacher when needed. It was fun to walk into class and see your mom teaching. Being a dual parishioner of both St Pius and St Benedicts, mama enjoyed taking care of the flowers and candles on the altar and cleaning the church and rectory once a week.
With a 30-year career as certified nursing assistant, mama took care of many patients. Her last being a 102-year-old Elizabeth Stallings whom she was very fond of for 8 years, her family was very gracious and kind to mama and treated her as family. Upon retirement, mama enjoyed bowling where she missed a perfect 300 game by 1 pin. Mama also enjoyed going antiquing with her best friends Betty Tarantelli and Gullanar Campbell at golden antiques in Summerfield where they became known as the golden girls.
Mama is predeceased by her parents, her aforementioned siblings, and one daughter Tamara Jane Wallace who passed in 2004 after a 20-year battle with MS. Mama cared for Tammy for the last 20 years of her life, as she went from walker to wheelchair to bed. 3 months later, my father had a massive stroke. She took care of him for the last 4 years of his life. She is survived by 3 children, Mark Bennet Wallace (Beth), Stephen Brian Wallace, and Stephanie Ann Cheek (Scott), 5 grandchildren, Stephen Bennet Wallace, Kristina Mosely Winchester (Sgt Brian Winchester of US Army), Gloria Briana Lynn Gonzalez, Logan Cole Mason, Maddox Walker Mason, and 4 beautiful great grandchildren bestowed upon mama by the Winchesters.
A mass of Christian burial will be held June 11th, 2026, at 10 am at St Pius x Catholic Church, 2210 N Elm St, Greensboro, NC 27408, A reception will follow at the Simmons center on site. A burial of both my mama and my daddy's ashes will take place at Westminster Gardens Cemetery, 3601 Whitehurst Rd, Greensboro, NC 27410 at 12:30 pm.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the MS society of NC or your favorite Pet adoption service, or local shelter as mama was an animal lover and taught us the same.
