

Greensboro- Mr. Metrah “Met” Warren Williams, 96, died December 31, 2013 at his residence. A celebration of life will be held at 2 PM, Sunday, January 12 at Hanes-Lineberry Funeral Home, N. Elm chapel preceded by visitation from 12:00 to 1:45 PM. Interment with military honors will be at Westminster Gardens.
Met was born in Aurora, NC to the late Onslow W. and Zadie Berry Williams. He served in the Army Air Corps 1943-45 as a B17 bombardier and was recognized for 55 combat missions and awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross (highest award of honor for WWII bombardier B-17), several air medals, Purple Heart, Presidential Unit Citation, and EAME Service Medal with 3 bronze stars. He was very proud to serve his country but very humble about his accomplishments. After the military he worked in air traffic control 1945-1973 at West Palm Beach, FL and in Greensboro and upon retirement he pursued his avocation by earning his A.S. Photographic Studies from Randolph Community College. He excelled at photography as was proven by several “Best of Show” awards, two photo-journalism essays in Life Magazine and was invited to participate in The Big Click: Photographs of One Day in North Carolina, April 23, 1989. He was the owner of M. Warren Williams Photography from 1952-2005. Met loved the outdoors and was a member of Sportsman’s Wildlife Club (Guilford County) and various Beaufort County NC hunting clubs. He was awarded numerous trophies from the NC Field Trial Association.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Rolla Thacker Bowman Williams (formerly of Pikebill, KY m. July 1998 in High Point) of the home; daughter, Kathleen W. Sharp of Tucson, AZ; sons, Metrah Warren Williams, Jr., of Greensboro and Robert Warren Williams of Sophia; nine grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren, and three great- great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife Lois Robinson Williams in 1996(of New Mexico, m. January 1945 in Raleigh); three siblings and daughter, Ellen W. Watkins in 2013 of Reidsville.
