Michael Joseph Burns

Michael Joseph Burns of Summerfield, NC, passed away suddenly on Monday, September 14, 2026. He was born on April 11, 1965, in Parma, Ohio, to Robert and Marilyn Burns and grew up in Seven Hills, Ohio, along with his six brothers and sisters. He was a proud graduate of Boston College, where he met his wife, Maureen. Together, they raised three wonderful children, of whom Mike was immensely proud. He loved nothing more than spending time in the company of his family and friends.

Mike was kind, generous and best known for his unfailing good humor and quick wit. He loved a good conversation and could find something in common with everyone. He was an exceptional cook and enjoyed experimenting with new recipes and sharing his dishes. He enjoyed hiking and exploring new trails with Maureen and their dogs. In his retirement, Mike spent much time entertaining family and friends in Oak Island, NC. He was a long-suffering yet loyal Cleveland sports fan. He took great pride in his work as an actuary, spending much of his career at Jefferson Pilot and Lincoln Financial. Respected and admired by his colleagues, he thoroughly enjoyed the time he spent with them.

Mike is survived by his adoring wife of almost 38 years, Maureen (O’Donnell); his daughters, Amanda, Jessica and husband Tanner; his son and best buddy, Nicholas; and the newest member of the family, grandson Owen Michael; his beloved mother, Marilyn; his loving siblings and their spouses, Robert, Kevin (Jill), Karen, sister-in-law Gail, Laura (Greg), and Jennifer (Geoff); his sisters-in-law, Mary Ellen (Mike) and Denise (Mike); and his many nephews and nieces, all of whom he loved dearly.

He was predeceased by his brother and best friend, Brian, and his beloved father, Robert. Mike’s light will always shine brightly in our family, and he will be forever missed.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mike’s memory to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or the Make-A-Wish Foundation would be appreciated.
