September 5, 1946 – June 9, 2026
Elias Michael “Mike” Melnyk, a lifelong resident of Greensboro, North Carolina, passed away on June 9, 2026, at the age of 79 after an extended illness. He was born on September 5, 1946, to Charles Melnyk and Lois Melnyk, both of whom preceded him in death.
Mike spent his life rooted in the community he loved, surrounded by family, friends, and a lifetime of stories—many of which he delivered with perfect timing and a signature dry wit.
Mike proudly served his country in the United States Army in Vietnam as a Huey and Black Hawk helicopter crew chief and mechanic. He later continued his military service with the National Guard Salisbury Detachment, carrying forward the same quiet strength, dedication, and sense of duty that defined his life. He also built a long and dedicated career with Duke Energy before retiring.
Mike was the kind of person you instantly liked—and more often than not, quickly loved. He had a big heart, a calm and steady presence, and a wonderfully dry sense of humor that could sneak up on you at just the right moment. He never needed to be the center of attention to be unforgettable; one perfectly timed comment from Mike could leave a room smiling long after.
Above all, Mike was the very best son, brother, and uncle. He is survived by his brother Steve (Charleen) Melnyk of Randleman and his brother John (Phil) Melnyk of Whitsett. He was preceded in death by his sister-in-law Teresa Melnyk.
He also leaves behind loving nieces: Michelle (Jonathan) Tippett of Randleman; Susie Straub of Woodstock, GA and Dee (Tim) Evans of Burlington. Mike was a proud great-uncle to Madyson (Chase) Waynick of Asheboro, Kennedy Joyce of Raleigh, Abby (Joe) White of Acworth, GA, and Michael Straub of Woodstock, GA; and a great-great uncle to Banks Waynick of Asheboro and Adam White of Acworth, GA.
Mike had a quiet way of making life feel a little lighter. Whether through a simple act of kindness or a perfectly delivered one-liner, he reminded those around him not to take life too seriously—and to always leave a little room for humor.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the caring nurses and staff at Home Place (TerraBella) of Burlington and AuthoraCare Collective Hospice for their compassion, kindness, and support.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mike’s memory to:

Mike will be deeply missed and fondly remembered—not only for what he accomplished, but for how he made people feel: welcomed, appreciated, and just a little more at ease.
