Minnie Winona Wood Murphy

April 5, 1926July 4, 2018

Mother, our warrior, has resurrected for the last time into the arms of God, Jesus, her siblings and parents. Minnie Winona Wood Murphy, 92, became freer on July 4, 2018. A service to celebrate her glorious spirit will be at 3PM, Sunday, July 8 at Hanes-Lineberry N. Elm chapel with Reverend Kaye Florence officiating, followed by interment in Guilford Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 1PM to 2:45 PM prior to the service at the funeral home.

Minnie was born in Guilford County to the late Baskim Lee and Jinnie Melinda Grubb Wood. After high school graduation she studied Business at Guilford College. Minnie was a free spirit who laughed often and lived life abundantly. Her thought processes and speech were uninhibited and she had a sense of adventure without trepidation. Even her outlook of her own mortality was different and she had several occasions to think of it as she suffered through more than a few episodes of health challenges over the years. Through it all she maintained her positive attitude and said last month “I can’t die a normal death. I have to do it in degrees.” Minnie had the opportunity to travel the world and particularly loved Italy. She had a delightful obsession with chocolate, ice cream and sweets and looked forward to her “Satdy” night outing for dinner. She loved to read and watch old movies on TMC. Her passion was her family and she entertained them with stories of her youth and travels. Minnie once said, regarding her long life, “God’s not through with me yet. He’ll know when it’s time.” She lived a life of joy, gratitude and love to the very end. Memories of Minnie will be lovingly held in the hearts of her daughters, Kellie Melinda and Clara Dee Murphy; grandchildren, Taylor Baskim Brooks-Murphy and Murphy Noelle Harrell; and many nieces and nephews she loved as her own children. In addition to her parents and spouse, Dewitt Vernon Murphy, she is preceded in death by her eight siblings, Ersley, Esther, Francis, Virginia, Lee, Sarah, Helen, and Doodie.

Dear Kellie, Clara and Family,
We extend our sympathy in the loss of Minnie. Through Eller Memorial, I had known Minnie, and the Wood Family, for many years. The service was great and Kaye did an excellent job leading - Lee and Edith were surely smiling down from Heaven. Being an Elvis fan, I especially enjoyed the music. Our prayers are with you all in the weeks ahead.

Such a lovely friend to all, who will be dearly missed. Minnie always made everyone feel welcome and I just loved her to pieces. She was fun to talk with, would hold your hand or pat your arm and really listened to what you had to say. Clara, Murphy, Kellie and Taylor - your world was sweeter because you had Minnie and you will always have her in your hearts. Love and hugs to all of you. God has gained another angel...

Minnie serenaded me with a rendition of "Billy Boy". Each time she remembered more of the lyrics until she had the complete song.

Kellie & Clara, you were so fortunate to have your Mom for 95 years. She was such an extraordinary Lady. I can just hear her Special laugh that no one else ever had. She will truly be missed by you, but think of all the good memories you have of her.

I will not be able to attend her service, but want you to know you are in my thoughts and prayers.

I was lucky to have spent time with Minnie over the last few years. She was gracious enough to invite me to spend “Saturday Nights” at dinner with her and Kellie. She was always free with a compliment “Bill, you look so handsome – Uptown.”
The time I spent watching TCM, which showed her favorite movies, and listening to her stories of family and travels, (which she would eventually finish even if interrupted) will always be cherished memories.
Minnie was the “enforcer.” When I went back to school, she would monitor my attendance and how I was keeping up with my assignments. She was also the first to congratulate me and was sincerely happy with my success.

A truly sweet and wonderful woman. I love you Minnie

Remembering every encounter with Minnie and it was always JOYFUL! Such an inspiration. Thankful, also, to have been part of her 90th birthday celebration. Sending much love to her beloved family and many friends.
