

Nancy Blue Schmidt, 85, passed away peacefully on May 27, 2026. She was born in Asheville, North Carolina, to the late Ruth Capel Blue and Walter Lee Blue. In addition to her parents, Nancy was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Charles R. Schmidt; her brother, Michael C. Blue; and her son-in-law, James E. Hutchens.
She is survived by her loving children, Laura S. Hutchens, David C. Schmidt and wife Kelly Cole-Schmidt, and Karen S. Rivers and husband Ben Rivers. She is also survived by her cherished grandchildren: Michael Hutchens, Christian Hutchens and wife Amber, Ethan Cole, Gavin Cole, Eric Schmidt, Emily Rivers, and Matthew Rivers.
Nancy dedicated 30 years of service to the acquisitions department at the UNCG Library. She was a passionate gardener and earned her Master Gardener certification.
Above all, Nancy treasured time spent with her family. She especially loved attending her grandchildren’s sporting events and celebrating their accomplishments. Nancy and her husband, Charles, created countless treasured memories while camping at North Carolina’s Outer Banks with their children, extended family, and the many friends who joined them over the years. She also valued the lifelong friendships she cultivated throughout her life. Whether shopping, sharing lunch or coffee, playing Mahjong, quilting, or celebrating holidays together with family and friends, she embraced every opportunity to connect with those she loved.
A celebration of her life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 6, 2026, at First Christian Church, 1900 West Market Street, Greensboro, North Carolina. A visitation will be held from 10:00 am to 11:00 am prior to the service.
