Nancy Chapman Hunt
June 25, 1919 – March 3, 2018
Nancy Chapman Hunt, age 98, died on March 3, 2018 in Raleigh, N.C.
Services will be held on Friday, March 9, 2018, to include interment at 10:00 AM at Westminster Gardens in Greensboro, N.C and Celebration of Life at 11:00 at her home church, First Baptist in Greensboro, N.C.
Our sweet, loving, smart Mama was born on Spring Street in Spartanburg, S.C. to Horace and Eunice Chapman on June 25, 1919. It was there that she grew up, the third of four siblings, with a childhood filled with adventure and neighborhood fun. Mama roller-skated, swung on a rope from the back yard tree, rode on the handlebars while sister or brother pedaled the bike, all the time unaware of struggles brought on by the depression. She graduated from Spartanburg High School and Converse College.
While teaching at Tucapau Elementary, Mama met Robert Hunt who was working at Tucapau Mills and living across the street in the white clapboard hotel on the hill. Their marriage, prior to his WWII deployment to Africa and Italy, lasted until Daddy’s death in 2010. After moving from textile town to textile town, they returned to Tucapau (now Startex, SC) until 1976 and then moved to Spartanburg, SC where mama worked at the Department of Social Services to help pay college tuition for us children. In 1984, these parents of ours retired to Ainsworth Drive in Greensboro. Countless friendships were developed and fun times were enjoyed in Greensboro and both Mama and Daddy treasured fellowship and worship at First Baptist Church there. In 2010, Mama and Daddy moved to senior living in Raleigh to be near Maria. Daddy’s death, shortly after that move, was crushing to all of us, especially Mama, but she continued on, without complaint, as was her way. Possessing strong character, kindness and humor, Mama was a positive and profound influence on her children and grandchildren. Her parents, her brother William Chapman, her sisters Blanche Anderson and Emily Ross and her grandson Brad preceded mama in death. Her children Reed and Rebekah Hunt of Oxford, MS, Stuart and Laura Hunt of Greensboro and Maria and Jim Butts of Wake Forest, NC. survive her. Surviving their Mema are grandchildren Reed Hunt, Brandon Hunt, Amanda Hunt, Patrick Hunt, Allison Arnold, Emily Myers, Stephen Butts, Phillip Butts and Kevin Butts. Twelve (plus one to be born in June) great grandchildren will miss her.
Memorial gifts may be made to First Baptist Church, 1000 West Friendly Avenue, Greensboro, NC 27401 or The Salvation Army, 1311 South Eugene Street, Greensboro, NC 27406 .

My deepest sympathy to the family.

So many fond memories of our days as neighbors there in Startex so long ago. Mrs Hunt always presided over the gathering at the church for vacation bible school. My condolences to all of the members of her extended family and especially to Stuart, Maria, and Reed from so very long ago.

I am Billy Chapman's wife, and Nancy was his aunt. We visited with her not too long ago, and I'm so glad we did. She was a kind and sweet lady, and Billy has many fond memories of her throughout his life. Condolences, thoughts, and prayers from both of us for family and friends of dear Aunt Nancy.
