Born in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, Nancy moved to North Carolina with her siblings in 1949. She graduated from Greensboro High School then moved to Winston-Salem where she met and married Pete Smits. She was a benevolent homemaker and hostess with a wide circle of friends, and a longtime member of St. John’s Lutheran Church. After raising her family, she worked as a sales associate at Thalhimer’s Department Store, then Hechts and finally Macy’s, where she retired. Throughout her life, she enjoyed her bridge clubs, traveling with friends, extended visits with family, and celebrating everyone’s birthdays. In later years she was fortunate to be able to live with both her sister Sandy and her sister Carol before moving into memory care. Sandy and Carol both precede her in death, as well as their brothers Jack and Bill. Surviving family include daughter Angie Smits and husband Russ Clegg of Greensboro NC, daughter Susan Smits of Wilmington NC, grandchildren Alex Clegg and husband Patrick French of Washington DC, and Audrey Clegg of San Francisco CA, along with numerous nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank all of Nancy’s caregivers near and far for taking such good care of their favorite patient.
