

She was born March 10, 1918 in Drexel, NC, daughter of Arthur James Berry and Clara Jarrett Berry. Graveside service will be held Monday, August 16, 2010 at 1:00 p.m. at Westminster Gardens with the Reverend Dr. Steve Pressley officiating. The family will receive friends on Sunday at Hanes Lineberry North Elm Chapel from 3:00 until 5:00 p.m.
She was a 1936 graduate of Rutherford College High School. She was a
57 year member of First Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school in the
late 1950’s and 1960’s. She was a weekly garden columnist for the Greensboro News & Record from 1965-2004. She received gardening awards from Greensboro Beautiful, Greensboro Park and Recreation Department, N.C. Agricultural Services, Guilford Horticultural Society. She was N.C. Wildflower Conservation Society, Emeritus. She spent many years developing her woodland garden and delighted in giving tours and sharing plants with those whose passion for gardening and plants she shared. She developed the Greensboro Bog Garden with Dr. Joe Christian; designed and planted wildflower trails in Bicentennial Garden and the Greensboro Arboretum; designed and helped plant nature trails at several local schools. She was a lecturer and gave slide programs on plants, animals and nature. The Christmas rose, Hellebore Niger, offered as the Nell Lewis strain, and accepted by England’s Royal Horticulture Society, is on the market. She was a Master Graphoanalyst and specialized in questioned documents.
She was preceded in death by her husband Ernest Gregory Lewis; sisters Elma Berry Tyler and Virginia Berry Feimster; brother Ray Allen Berry; and son-in-law Steve Hathcock.
Surviving are daughters Randi Lewis Hathcock of Greensboro, Reeta Lewis Reed and husband Larry of Knoxville, TN; sister Juanita Berry Abernathy and husband Adrain of Drexel, NC; sister-in-law Helen F. Berry of Drexel, NC; three grandsons, three granddaughters; five great-grandsons and four great-granddaughters; five nieces and three nephews.
The family would like to express sincere thanks to the entire staff of Golden Living Center Starmount and Wesley Long Palliative Care for the care they extended to Nell and the support shown to her family.
