On the morning of May 24, 2025, Nickolas “Nick” Scott Doss, 38, passed away peacefully at home in the loving presence of his family. Though cancer claimed him far too soon, it could never diminish the profound and lasting impact he made on this world.
Born in Greensboro, North Carolina, Nick was the beloved son of Tammy and Bobby Doss. He was raised in the close-knit community of Mayodan, NC, where his quiet strength, kindness, and humor quickly became known to all who met him. A graduate of McMichael High School class of 2005, Nick went on to work alongside his father at United Refrigeration.
In 2013, Nick married his high school sweetheart, Carrie, and together they built a life filled with love, laughter, and music in McLeansville, NC. Their home was shared with their cherished rescued greyhounds, Mannie and Kiki.
Music was Nick’s passion. A gifted bassist and devoted bandmate, he played in several metal and rock bands over the years, leaving his mark on local stages and in the hearts of fellow musicians. His encyclopedic knowledge of music was legendary among friends, and concerts were among his most joyful pursuits. Whether on stage or in the crowd, Nick lived every note with intensity and soul.
Nick’s compassion extended beyond his family and friends. As a longtime volunteer with Greyhound Friends of North Carolina and Project Racing Home, he found joy in giving ex-racing dogs a loving home. His empathy, patience, and kindness endeared him to the greyhound community.
Professionally, Nick rose through the ranks at United Refrigeration’s Greensboro branch over 16 years. He built a respected career and formed genuine connections with coworkers and customers. His integrity and quiet leadership as a branch manager left a lasting impression.
Nick is survived by his devoted wife, Dr. Carrie Doss; his parents, Tammy and Bobby Doss; his brother, Michael Doss, wife Breanna, and their children Ellie and Miles; sister-in-law Dr. Sarah McGrath-Blaser, husband Nick Blaser, and their children Isabel and James; mother-in-law Susanna McGrath; and aunts, uncles, cousins, a host of extended family and lifelong friends who cherished him deeply.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents Sidney and Orene Taylor; Hassell and Cora Doss; his father-in-law, John McGrath; and other beloved family members.
The Doss family wishes to extend a heartfelt thanks to the Wesley Long Cancer Center and AuthoraCare Collective for their compassionate care and support.
A Celebration of Nick's Life will be held at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, June 8 at the Family Life Center at Mayodan First Baptist Church, 111 East Main Street, Mayodan, NC 27027. The family will receive friends following the service until 5:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Nick’s honor to The Guilford County Animal Shelter, The Barry L. Joyce Local Cancer Support Fund, or a charity of your choice.
