Nicole spent her life loving intensely, animals as well as people. She expressed her love best through tireless work helping others. Nicole was born on October 19, 1976 in Greensboro, NC. She grew up feeling a deep connection with horses. Her first degree after high school was an Associate of Science in Equine Training from Martin Community College. Her first full-time job was at Thacker Stables (Now Heritage Stables). Nicole was alone with a pregnant mare one night and helped the horse give birth. They named the foul Nikki in Nicole’s honor. She also volunteered for years with the Animal Rescue & Foster Program (ARFP) in Greensboro.
Nicole earned a Bachelor of Arts of Political Science and a Master of Public Affairs at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She began her career managing the Self-Sufficiency Program at the Interactive Resource Canter, helping individuals experiencing or at risk of homelessness connect with resources and find jobs. Nicole also cultivated relationships with local business owners and service providers to create collaborative partnerships.
One way Nicole demonstrated her commitment to the environment was to travel everywhere by bike. She became an integral member of Greensboro’s cycling community. Nicole spent over eight years as the Project Coordinator at BIG (Bicycles in Greensboro) where she coordinated advocacy efforts and community outreach to foster a more bicycle friendly environment. She worked with city officials to forge beneficial partnerships. She also oversaw Changing Gears, a program to provide homeless people with bicycles.
Nicole left an indelible mark on everyone she loved, animals as well as people. She was a unique and beautiful soul whose impact on her community will be felt for years to come. Nicole is survived by her parents, Toni and Steve Lindahl, her brother Erik, her sister-in-law Becky, her niece Ava, her cousins Anya, Kevin, and Patty, and her partner Matthew Martin.
A memorial service at Fellowship Presbyterian Church in Greensboro will be held at a date to be determined. In lieu of flowers please send contributions to the World Wildlife Fund in Nicole’s name.
