Patsy was born in High Point on March 19, 1937, to the late Janet Dunlap Caughman and Nesbit Harper Caughman. She attended High Point Public Schools before attending the University of South Carolina in Columbia to study music. Before graduation, Patsy was appointed by Governor Luther Hodges to represent the State of North Carolina as a guide at the 1958 World’s Fair in Brussels, Belgium. When the Fair ended, she was permitted to travel behind the Iron Curtain, one of the first American citizens to visit countries of Eastern Europe at that time. Having spent a year in Europe, she returned to Columbia to complete her academic requirements and to perform her final piano recitals. She then did her graduate work in piano at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York.
Patsy was pre-deceased by her loving husband of 40 years, Julius Phillip Covington. She is survived by a daughter, Elizabeth Covington Carlson of Charlotte NC and a son, Stephen Phillip Covington (Greta) of Athens GA; three grandchildren – Robert Wharton Carlson of New York City, Louise Celeste Covington of Jackson WY, and Ann Harper Covington of Atlanta GA; two brothers – Nesbit Harper Caughman Jr of Wethersfield CT and James Franklin Caughman (Dede) of Washington DC; and many nieces and nephews.
Patsy spent her entire adult life in Greensboro where she was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church. For many years, she shared her knowledge of music and the piano by giving private lessons and by teaching music in public schools as a volunteer. She also served the community by working at the Junior League Bargain Box and generously volunteering (as a Pink Lady years ago) at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital.
Throughout Patsy’s life, she took great delight in following the University of North Carolina basketball team, enjoying classical music and the game of bridge, which she played competitively throughout her life. Outgoing and fun-loving, Patsy enjoyed nothing more than sharing her friendship, humanity, and love with friends. It gave her great pleasure later in life when she chose to work at Carolyn Todd’s, a popular gift shop, where she would regularly encounter her many friends. Above all, she understood and appreciated that life’s greatest riches came from her beloved family.
A celebration of life service will be held on Thursday, May 21, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 617 North Elm Street in Greensboro. The family will greet friends following the service in the Virginia Gilmer Room. Memorial donations may be made to the First Presbyterian Church Music Fund (617 North Elm Street, Greensboro 27401), Well-Spring Retirement Community Benevolent Fund (4100 Wellspring Drive, Greensboro 27410), or to the charity of one’s choice.
The family would like to thank the staff of Well-Spring who befriended and cared for Patsy during her eight wonderful years living at Well-Spring.
