Paul Michael Sappenfield was a devoted father of two sons, loving and supportive husband, indulgent fun loving grandfather and trustworthy friend. He had a heart for others and always managed to find positivity in every situation. His family said goodbye to him on September 9, 2021 when he died at the age of 68.

Mike was born in Floyd County, Indiana and employed as a machinist with Lorillard Tobacco. He married the love of his life Robin Emery in 1983. In 1985, they relocated to Greensboro with his job. Mike was an avid Indiana basketball fan and the king of “one liners”.

He is survived by his wife Robin E. Sappenfield of the home; sons and their wives, Adam and Ashley Sappenfield and Kyle and Tara Sappenfield; grandchildren, Adalyn and Callie Sappenfield; brothers, Robert, Ronnie, David, Kenny and Sam Sappenfield and John Barnett; sister, Wanda Barnett; numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his immediate family, Mike was a father figure to countless others who cherish his memory. His parents, Glenn “Butch” and Bonnie Barnett, brothers, John and Larry Jo Sappenfield and sister, Naomi “Gayle” Sappenfield preceded him in death.

Friends are invited to share memories of Mike during a gathering on September 14, 2021 from 4 to 8 PM at Hanes-Lineberry N. Elm chapel. Mike will truly be missed. I am glad I was able to get to see him (and Brother Bob) just a few months ago. He was a great friend to my entire family and especially my Dad. I have been to the track with these guys countless times over a number of years. Rest in Heaven my friend.

To the best father-in-law I could ever ask for: I’ll miss your smile, your laugh, and you roasting me about the Packers and Wisconsin basketball. I’ll miss the mornings sitting on the Lake Brandt carport drinking coffee and talking about so many things. I’ll never forget all your acts of kindness even before Adam and I were engaged—buying me new tires, encouraging me when I was worried about my first job after passing the bar, celebrating every triumph like I was your daughter. I miss you, you were my Dad too. I’m so happy you could meet Callie. I can’t wait to tell her all about you when she’s older. We love you.

Mike. Thank you so much for being a loving & caring husband to Robin. Thank you for loving Adam & Kyle and for sharing and showing your sons how to love with their hearts and to respect. It’s because of you & Robin that your sons will carry on your legacy. They will love their family with their hearts. Thank you so much for being a brother to all of the Emery gang. We are so grateful to have had you in our lives. Your granddaughters will forever love you. Fly high with the Angels. Darcy Emery Wilson

Mike was a wonderful and very wise man. He loved his family fiercely, and his granddaughters were the light of his life. He will be missed by all, but his one-liners will definitely live on in his memory and bring a smile to all who hear them. Rest easy Mike we love you💜

No one will ever know how much I will miss my brother. We would talk on the phone 3-4 mornings a week, conversation would start with me saying, "P Michael are you drinking coffee", he would reply "Yes I am Robert Glen, are you". We would analyze the Indiana Basketball Game the night before and after the game. Will miss the good times and memories we made on vacations in Gatlinburg and other places. The trips we made to Cherokee Casino where the Indians scalped us and left us pennyless. The times we went to the Horse Racing Tracks and handicapped the horse races together. I know you are in Peace now. I love you, your brother Bob.
