Peggy Joyce McGhee Ion

Peggy Joyce McGhee Ion, 87, passed away Wednesday, July 3, 2024, at her residence. Born March 13, 1937, in Franklin County, NC, she was the daughter of the late Robert Thomas Bowen McGhee and Inez Lovenia Gay McGhee.

A funeral service will be held at 12:00 pm Saturday, July 20, at Irving Park United Methodist Church, 1510 West Cone Boulevard, officiated by Rev. Scott Taylor. Interment will follow at Lakeview Memorial Park, 3600 North O’Henry Boulevard. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

Peggy had a very successful and fulfilling career with Aetna Insurance for over 20 years.

In addition to her parents, Peggy was preceded in death by her husband, William “Bill” Ion; son, Jeffrey S. Johnson; step-son, Carrick Ion; sister, Vinette M. Mitchell; brother, Robert (Mac) McGhee and nephew, Doyle Hiter.

She is survived by her step-daughter, Wendy Ion; step-son, Todd Ion and daughter-in-law, Sandy L. Johnson. She is also survived by nieces, Mary Mitchell and Sharon M. Blevins; nephew, Howard Mitchell and Cindy; great niece, Tennille Altman and Mitch; great nephew, Matt Blevins and Tiffany; great niece, Amanda Blevins; great niece, Anna Marie Schumitta and great nephew, Rob Mitchell and Meaghan; great-great nieces, and nephews, Alexa and Avery Altman, Thomas Blevins, Stephen Baddorf, Jaina and Jace Schumitta, Holton and Brayden Mitchell. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Alice McGhee, niece, Renee McGhee-Lopez, nephews, Tim McGhee, Tom McGhee, and Gary McGhee and several more great nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Lana and Bill Hiter.

Peggy was known as Nana to Marcus Gregory, Melissa Gregory-Saez, and Richard “RJ” Gregory and also, to her great grandchildren Parker, Claudia, Michael, Alex, Daniel, Savannah and Charlie.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in her memory may be made to Irving Park United Methodist Church, 1510 West Cone Boulevard, Greensboro, NC 27408.
