Mrs. Rachael Brugh Holmes of Greensboro, North Carolina, born January 30, 1926, died early Sunday morning, November 19, 2017 at Wesley Long Hospital at the age of 91. She was the daughter of the late Mary and Kone Brugh of Roanoke, Virginia.
She is survived by her two sons, George Blake Holmes, Jr. of Virginia Beach, VA and John Frederick Holmes (Pam) of Mt. Gilead, NC; six daughters, Rosemary Holmes Niles of Spring, TX, Jane Douglas Hearn (Jeff) of Raleigh, NC, Rachael Brugh Holmes, Jr. of Charlottesville, VA; Katherine Holmes Moody (Scott) of Cary, NC, Emilie Holmes Covil of Coconut Creek, FL; Rebecca Holmes Leopard of Durham, NC; 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased in death by her loving and devoted husband, The Reverend George Blake Holmes, her youngest daughter Shirlee Holmes Garratt, and one sister, Edna Brugh Ritter, and two brothers, Blair Brugh and Warren Brugh.
She was a native of Nace in Botetourt County, in Virginia, where she spent her youth and graduated from Longwood College in Virginia. She was a devoted and faithful minister’s wife. A loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and often a “second mom” to neighbors, members of the congregation, and former students.
She served the public by teaching school, helping others learn to read, working at the NC Job Service in Asheboro, NC, and was a former Executive Secretary for a bank in Virginia.
A Celebration of Life service will be conducted at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Greensboro, North Carolina on Saturday, November 25, 2017 at 11:00 am. Inurnment will take place at Mill Creek Baptist Church Cemetery at a later date.
It was the Rachael’s request that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, 608 Greene St. Greensboro, NC 27401 or Well Spring, 4100 Well Spring Drive, Greensboro, NC 27410. In lieu of a memorials, she asked that you perform a random act of kindness for someone in need. Those who knew her well, she asked that you continue your personal commitment to God, country, church, family, and friends with inner peace with yourselves and harmony with others to honor of her memory, faith, and legacy.
Hanes-Lineberry N. Elm St. Chapel in Greensboro, has the honor of assisting the Holmes family. The inurnment in Virginia will be handled by Botetourt Funeral Home.
