Greensboro-Richard D. Ziesig, 84, died peacefully at his residence after illness on May 29, 2014. A Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 AM, Wednesday, June 4, at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church followed by interment at Westminster Gardens Cemetery.
Richard was born in Brooklyn, NY to the late Rudolph and Marie Geiser Ziesig. Prior to moving to Greensboro he lived in Wilmington for sixteen years. He achieved the rank of Staff Sargent in the US Army and served during the Korean War, which instilled in him a love and patriotism for his country he carried throughout his life. Richard was a man of great faith and attended Our Lady of Grace and was a member of St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Churches. He was extremely passionate about and supported the pro-life movement. He was a member of the New Hanover Pro Life Council and served on the board of directors for the Life Line Pregnancy Center. Richard will be remembered as a quietly funny, kind, generous and loyal friend. To his family he was a loving husband, supportive father and wonderfully fun-loving grandfather. He doted on his grandchildren and enjoyed keeping them entertained and will be remembered by other members of the family (those not blessed with having a grandfather) as a “surrogate” grandfather. He was an avid golfer, enjoyed reading (especially about history) and traveled the world with his wife of 36 years, Carmen Criscuolo Ziesig. He best buddy and canine companion, Bailey, will miss him too.
Surviving Richard are his wife, Carmen; children, Barbara Bruner of Palm Harbor, FL, Karen (Bill) Murray of Fairfield, CT, Patricia Ziesig of Marco Island, FL, Michael (Josie) Maffucci of Yonkers, NY and Kevin (Deana) Ziesig of Nashville, TN; grandchildren, Sean Bruner, Christopher and Allyson Orzo, Mollie and Emily Boyer, and Christina, Amanda and Olivia Maffucci; and several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.
