All week I’ve been trying to find the best words to describe Rita. Last night I laid in bed and all I could think was how much I would love to hug her one more time. Growing up my aunt Susannah Miller Scearce and I would always talk about love. Whether it was at a Starbucks in Raleigh, a Cuban restaurant in Miami or a friends house in Charlotte, it always came up in conversation. Many times it would be about guys but more often than that it’d be about the love we receive and give to family and friends. Rita was the perfect example of love. Anyone who came in contact with Rita felt loved. I don’t think Rita new any strangers and welcomed all in an embrace that could brighten any rainy day. She loved us all so well and that will be missed greatly. I rest in the fact knowing that she has changed our lives for the better and that the love she gave us will live on for generations. Rita, I will always love you and miss you so much. I ask for prayers for our family, especially those closest to her and for everyone who knew her.

I met Rita and her family in the 80s when we worked at John Hancock. Whoever originated the phrase that "She is one in a million" probably had Rita in mind. When I married Don, he became a friend of Rita and Jerry too, especially at events at St Pius X Church. When you had a conversation with Rita, she always remembered your children, their jobs, where they lived, their children's names and ages. How did she do this for her vast group of friends? It was one of her many gifts to be so caring of others. Rita could have won an Olympic Medal for Friendship. Not that she wasn't funny . That was another priceless part of her. Jerry too. Love like theirs lasts and will be part of their inheritance for the boys and their families. God Bless You, Scearce family! Love, Melissa and Don

Although I never physically meet Rita, I enjoyed working with her over the phone/webex for years at UnitedHealthcare. When my company got taken over by UHC, I was assigned to Rita for questions about the new system - NDB (she never let me down). Later, we were chosen for the new coaching team (she was the expert in NDB; I was the expert in my old company's system). Then, Rita & I stayed together as UHC moved that team to the audit team. I eventually ended up being the Supervisor of that audit team & quickly made Rita my NDB expert. Even when I moved over to the reporting team (in the same area), we still kept in contact until Rita's retirement.
I am so sorry for your loss and I want to thank you for sharing the sweetest person that I have ever worked with !!
Thoughts and Prayers,
Kim Swank (UHC)

Rita was a very special person. Even as she went through hard times she always had a smile and a nice word. When her son Brian married my sister in law Susannah there was an immediate bond there. I can remember all the great holidays we had together and how she welcomed my family as her own.
She is greatly loved and missed so very much.
God Bless Rita and may she rest in peace.

We loved Rita from our very first meeting when she and Jerry came to dinner after Susannah & Brian became engaged. So even though we’ve only known her & Jerry not quite seven years, they INSTANTLY became members of our family. Rita brought her bright smile, macaroni & cheese and gifts for the kids to every family gathering. She was loved by every single person in the family, from babies to ninety year olds. She was an inspiration to me as a loving, generous and very kind caregiver. Her joy in living and her wit and laughter will be remembered and passed down to generations to come. May she be welcomed into heaven & crowned with glory!

Such a sweet lady, welcomed us warmly into her life. She was a cornerstone in her family and I know their grief has to be strong. James, Brandon, and I will always feel part of the Vetter family and Aunt Rita was a large part of that. We are thankful for the moments she was part of our world.

I remember Rita as one the "John Hancock" family. Her laughter was infectious and always made you laugh with her. Her quick wit and sense of humor made her so enjoyable to be around. I lost track of Rite several years ago until we connected on facebook. I pray for her family and she will be so missed. Goodnight Rita, there's a shining star up in the sky with your name on it.

Along with the rest of my family, my heart is aching from the loss of our BELOVED Rita.
Seeking comfort and wanting to feel closer to her, I looked at her face book. I came across this post from her on 12/29/19

If you remember anything of me after I leave this world, remember that I LOVED even when it was foolish, that I CARED even when even it was unwanted. When my body is gone ,remember my HEART
WELL Rita, we remember., your HEART , your BIG HEART, your HEART of GOLD.
We remember your HEART and you will forever be a part of ours.
I love you my cousin, my sister, my friend , Mickey

My sweet aunt Rita. I will forever miss our long phone calls, shopping trips, nail dates, and just sitting in her living room talking about life. She gave the best advice and reassurance, and was one person I knew I could always count on. We will always talk about the loving, generous, witty, sweet woman she was. I find comfort in knowing she is in a better place, young again, and out of pain.

She was Aunt Rita to me and she loved our family with her whole being. She taught me how to be a daughter, a sister, a Christian, and a friend. Our family has a hole without her but will use the love she gave us all as a compass going forward. I’m so thankful for all of the time we did get with her. She was an angel on earth.
